What does it mean to live in a democracy?

• Democracy is defined as a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.

• On the other hand, we base a lot of our own decisions on what our authority says

Poverty

• Poverty is defined as the state of being extremely poor. • Even though you may not be able to afford many material

items, everyone is created equal and we all have equal opportunities as citizens of this country.

What is your role as a citizen?

• My role as a citizen is to be an active member in our government choices and understand that my opinion and vote counts

Racism

• We can also pass on good morals and values to our future children

• Our home environment, peers, and media can influence how we look at different races. We are all created equal no matter what

War

• Being patriotic is another way we can play an active role in our democracy

• It isn’t just fighting for our country, it’s what you contribute to the people and places around you

Social Movements

• Civil disobedience is defined as the active, professed refusal to obey certain laws, demands, and commands of a government

• If we strongly disagree with something, our actions and words can go a long way and we should speak up for change
