What to do when you’re running out of data center space.

As the battle for data center space intensifies, resources shrink and competition becomes fiercer. How to resolve the dilemma? Focus on increasing capacity within existing parameters. Find innovative ways to leverage technology and maximize availability through infrastructure planning, including virtualization and cloud/on demand service delivery.

Approaches to Consider Stay where you are. Put infrastructure projects on hold and work with what you have. Upgrade your physical space or technology. This is a short term solution to a long term problem, but could allow IT managers to buy some time.

Go somewhere else: Move selected storage needs and/or applications to a cloud or SaaS model. to one-tenth of their size, and capacity maximized by 60% or more (traditional servers often run at a mere 20% capacity). But keep in mind the specific power and network management functions required to maintain maximum performance and functionality.
