Research Skills: Day 2

Yesterday, we looked at finding information, but what do you do with it once you find it???

Grouping Information

Find common elements in your research such as: plot, challenges, author, etc... and then designate symbols to represent each.

Go through your research and label each item appropriately.

Once your information is grouped, you can begin to write using headings.

Let's practice doing some grouping together. We are going to look at a series of research points on dragons. Read through them and think about some possible groups...

Let's try another:

Now, you are going to go back to your groups from yesterday. You should have a list of points to work with based on the articles you read.

Step 1: re-read your points.

Step 2: group your points using circle, square, triangle

Step 3: use headings (your new main ideas) to group your points and be prepared to share your information with the class.

Then, once you have the information all and the main ideas - a.k.a. the groups, it's time to put the presentation together!

The HOOK

The beginning of a speech is like a stage entrance. The purpose is to gain the audiences attention, and to establish rapport and credibility with the audience.

The OVERVIEW

Just like in an essay...

·Introduce your topic (what is it?)

·Reveal your point of view (why do you care?)

·Relate it to your audience (why should they care?)

The Elaboration

This is where you give more information about your topic. However, you still need to connect with your audience and have a plan!

·Expand on your points while speaking TO the audience.

·DO NOT read from the screen, OR from a print out

·Use graphics

·Do NOT fill the page with text

·Make them legible!

The Ending

If you feel your words can't deliver the appropriate punch, consider using other people's words.

Do not just say "I'm done!"

Ending a presentation effectively is as important as starting it with a strong impression. The ending should resonate, inspire, and connect!
