Voice Quick Tips: New Facebook Privacy Settings

Introduction

Facebook privacy settings have been updated recently. They are still available from few levels of our user interface, so we hope that this quick guide will help you use the network safely.

It is crucial to understand the implications your behaviour in this social network will have on your friends, so please make sure you check and set up your privacy settings.

Be considerate when you manage your contact lists, provide access to your content and your network and when you upload content related to your networks.

Facebook privacy settings have few levels of access. You can access most options from the top right corner of your screen.

Privacy Settings First set up the access to your profile information. Each section has its own settings on the right hand side. You can choose to allow everyone (“public”), your friends, only yourself or specified people to see each piece of information.

While editing privacy settings of your profile information you can always view the settings. If you hide posts from some of your contacts do check how they can preview your profile.

If you tag your contacts in your status update their name will appear on your status update. With the new privacy settings your contacts can control the updates you tag them in, so if they approve the tag, the status will also appear on their wall.

You can tag your posts with your location, but always consider the safety of all people included in your post. Ask them if they want to be tagged with this particular location before you post!

You can control the target audience and viewership of each of your status updates. Here also you will be able to customise it to specific people.

Back in your main privacy settings area you can choose a default access to all your content and to your past posts.

You can also control the access of 3rd party applications and companies to your personal information stored on the network.

The new privacy settings give us more control over the content we share and over our own personal information but the safety of yourself and your network depends on you – please manage your contacts, all your settings and post responsibly.
