Project Management Certificate Program UC Irvine Extension is a global charter member of the Project Management Institute, the governing bodythat sets the standards for excellence in the projectmanagement profession. Most project managers startwith training in the technology of their projects, but frequently lack an understanding of the managerialfunction necessary to manage projects. With industryleaders as instructors, UC Irvine Extension’s ProjectManagement Certificate Program teaches studentshow to apply fundamental project management principles, theories and practices, including the concepts described in the most recent edition of AGuide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge(PMBOK® Guide).

The program offers an organized sequence of coursesthat will provide preparation in the practice of profes-sional project management. Required courses coverthe body of knowledge helpful in preparing for theProject Management Professional (PMP®) exam.Elective courses further develop skills in the area ofprocess improvement, scheduling using MicrosoftProject, rapid product development, and cost management.

Who Should EnrollThis program benefits project managers from all industries who want to prepare for the PMP exam,project team members who want to upgrade their skillsto become project managers, and those who want tomake a career transition into project management.Upon completing the program, graduates will meet theeducational requirements to sit for the PMP® exam.Education credits in this certificate are not only valid as professional development units, but are also trans-ferable toward applicable degrees at our partner universities.

Certificate RequirementsTo receive the Project Management Certificate from UC Irvine Extension, you must complete six requiredcourses and two elective courses each with a gradeof “C” or better for a minimum of 175 hours of instruc-tion. These requirements must be fulfilled within fiveyears. Although interested persons who are not certifi-

cate candidates may enroll in any or all of the courses, certificate candidates should apply for the CertificateProgram before completing the third class in whichhe/she enrolls.

After you have completed all requirements, you mayrequest to receive your official certificate by completingthe Request for Certificate Form (available online)and returning it to our offices as noted on the form.

Accelerated FormatOur accelerated format gives you the same compre-hensive and in-depth course of study as the traditionalformat. However, the concentrated course schedule in the accelerated program expedites your learningexperience, enabling you to achieve your educational,professional and organizational goals in as few as 9months. You may enroll in the accelerated format atany time and may begin in any quarter. Participantstaking courses in the classroom or online format may also take any course in the accelerated format.Accelerated courses are held at our satellite campus(UCI Learning Center) located at 200 South ManchesterAve, Orange, California.

Introduction to Project Management Principles and Practice (Mgmt X442.28 – 2.5 units) Project management has been proven to be the mosteffective method of delivering products within cost,schedule, and resource constraints. Gain a workingknowledge of the basics of project management thatcan be instantly applied to any project. This course willprovide the skills to ensure your projects deliver on timeand on budget. Learn to define and manage scope viathe elicitation of requirements and the creation of adetailed work breakdown structure, create a defensibleand realistic project schedule and budget, develop andmanage the project team, identify and manage risks,and understand the project procurement processes.Prerequisite: None

Management, Leadership and Team Building in the Project and Program Environment (Mgmt X474.9 – 3 units)The success of projects is dependant upon people andhow effectively they work and communicate with oneanother. You will reflect upon your role as a manager/leader within a project management framework. Exploreconcepts of human behavior, motivation, problem solv-ing, decision-making, influence, conflict management,and organization structure. Build skills in recognizingand managing project stakeholders, communications,team development, and working with virtual teammembers, via presentations, case studies, readings,essays, and discussions. Prerequisite: Mgmt X442.28

Project Procurement Management: Contracting,Subcontracting, Teaming (Mgmt X478.7 – 2 units)Procurement management has become a vital projectmanagement skill, as organizations increasingly out-source all but their core competencies. Understand thescope of procurement management in the contempo-rary project management environment and the role andresponsibility of the procurement manager. Learn toestablish project scope, develop a procurement man-agement plan, select the proper contract type, definestrategic teaming agreements, evaluate and selectsuppliers, and track supplier performance. Prerequisite:Mgmt X442.28

Project Risk Management (Mgmt X474.1 – 2.5 units)

Project success is achieved by project managers andteams skilled in coping with project risks. Making gooddecisions and using proven processes requires bothtraining and experience. Gain in-depth practice apply-ing subjective and quantitative methods to an actualproject situation. Learn from peers through risk analysisexercises, case studies, and persuasive presentations.Discover how to recognize, assess, and respond toproject risks in an appropriate, cost effective manner in order to make better decisions. Prerequisite: Mgmt X442.28

Earned Value Project Management (Mgmt X474.7 – 2 units)Earned value is a technique for defining and establish-ing project scope, schedule and cost in order to alignwith executive management expectations. Learn to usethe earned value method to establish a realistic projectbaseline, calculate a range of estimates-at-completion(EAC), and apply effective methods for keeping yourproject budget and schedule on target. Develop thestrategies to effectively monitor, measure, and controlcosts and schedule. Set project standards and metricsto measure project success and forecast results. Hands-on exercises in this course will demonstrate howearned value can be used on any project of any size.Prerequisite: Mgmt X442.28

ORProject Monitoring and Control (Mgmt X452.39 – 2 units)This course establishes the essential steps to plan aproject by developing a performance measurementbaseline (PMB) to integrate the project cost andschedule information. During execution of the plan,compare schedule and cost progress data to actualperformance to date by applying earned value metrics(EVM). Use EVM to determine project costs andschedule variances and to forecast the likelihood ofcompleting the project within the established PMB.Explain variances and likelihood of recovery.Prerequisite: Mgmt X442.28

Project Cost Management (Mgmt X442.29 – 2.5 units) No organization has unlimited time, money, orresources. For that reason, cost management can be used to evaluate the benefits and expenses of the project in relation to other potential projects before aselection is made. Learn to evaluate and analyze thefinancial viability and non-financial issues. Reviewbasic financial terms and concepts that influence project selection decisions and understand all aspectsof project planning. Discover how to prepare a costestimate and budget in addition to considering wayshow to monitor and control cost and manage changesto the cost baseline. Prerequisite: Mgmt X442.28

Elective Courses (Choose 2) Systems Engineering for Project Managers (Mgmt X472.85 – 2.5 units)Learn the benefits of combining traditional projectmanagement with a systems approach for an improvedproduct development cycle focused on customer needsand reduced overall costs. Ensure steady progresstoward a project’s technical objectives through efficientuse of financial and human resources, and timely completion of the project. In this effective system allcomponents interact harmoniously—encouraging systematic and repeatable planning, design, and imple-mentation throughout. Specific systems engineering,process and management topics will be reviewed.

Project Management Using MS Project 2007 (Mgmt X474.24 – 1.5 units) Learn the skills needed to enhance the outcomes ofmanaging projects. Gain knowledge of the fundamentalsof project scheduling and the key area of knowledgefor planning projects using Microsoft Project 2007(Windows). This course will emphasize the importanceof defining the total project with the use of a WorkBreakdown Structure (WBS); then formally issuing andcontrolling the project with the use of a Project MasterSchedule (PMS). Prerequisite: None

Advanced Project Management Techniques Using MS Project 2007 (Mgmt X474.27 – 2.5 units) Gain advanced skills and knowledge in building andmanaging complex projects using Microsoft Project 2007 (Windows). Review scheduling techniques andmethods used to support Critical Path Method, theperformance of Risk Analysis, and for the managementof multiple projects in an integrated team environment.Learn to identify and resolve common problems, usemethods for debugging the schedule, and developcustom reports. Study and apply techniques for the useof Earned Value method of performance measurement,tracking the progress of projects, resource loadingmethods, and advanced techniques for budget devel-opment. Recommended Prerequisite: Mgmt X474.24

Advanced PMBOK® Guide Applications (PMP Preparation Exam) (Mgmt X474.48 – 2.5 units) Review the nine knowledge areas in the PMBOK® Guideand the key concepts in Professional Responsibility.Prepare to pass the PMP® Examination with a focus on understanding how to integrate the detailed projectmanagement processes. To measure your preparednessfor the exam, this course will provide exercises, practicequestions, practice exams, and practical tips from ProjectManagement Professionals®. The content of this courseis fully compliant and aligns with the Guide to theProject Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®

Guide) – Fourth Edition. Prerequisite: Minimum of 35hours of project management instruction, 4,500 hours of project management experience with a bachelorsdegree, or 7,500 hours without a bachelors degree.

Managing Business Process Improvement Projects(Mgmt X474.10 – 2.5 units) Learn how the structured approach of business processimprovement (BPI) can be performed at all levels in anorganization. Through a series of training activities, youwill learn how to select, design, sell, implement, andinstitutionalize the changes necessary for effective BPI.Determine the process flow of a project, evaluate inef-fective use of time, and change the process for improvedeffectiveness. In addition, collaborate on a class projectthat will allow for application of techniques to organiza-tion's processes and procedures. Prerequisite: None

Lean Project Management (Mgmt X478.3 – 2.5 units) Review methods to enable dramatic reductions in project cycle time while maintaining effective controlover budget, resources, risk, and delivered value—organizations that have embraced these conceptshave reported up to 75 percent reduction in project life cycle with dramatic improvements in non-recurringcost and customer satisfaction. Interactive exercisesexplore topics such as how to eliminate organizationaltime barriers, the continuous-flow development process,and advanced strategies for exploiting knowledgereuse and economies of scope on quick-turn projects.

Management of Multiple Projects (Mgmt X478.6 – 2.5 units) Managing multiple projects typically presents uniquechallenges compared to the management of one largeproject. Build on your existing skills in the areas ofscope, time, cost, risk, human resources, leadershipand teambuilding through a combination of lecture and team-based learning exercises. Learn to select themost effective strategies and responses for multiple,small independent projects, portfolios, or large pro-grams. Individual and group exercises will explorescheduling techniques and honing in on an assess-ment of project environments through stakeholderanalysis. An adaptable multi-project simulation will alsoreinforce the benefits of cooperation for mutual gain. Prerequisite: Mgmt X442.28

Project Management of Information Technology(Mgmt X474.8 – 2 units)Focus on the unique challenges of managing an ITproject in an enterprise. Discuss those elements ofproject management that are of greatest interest to ITworkers, including requirements definition and use-caseanalysis, performance metrics, risk determination andmitigation, task identification, scheduling, verificationand testing, and version control. IT staff members willlearn to work more productively with business analysts,who frequently initiate IT projects.

Managing Project Stakeholder Risks (Mgmt X474.28 – 1.5 units) Discover methods for significantly reducing risks thatarise from poor communications by applying risk management techniques to stakeholder management.Rather than handling communications and risk manage-ment as separate processes, each producing separateoutputs in the project plan, learn to integrate them formore effective communications that can improve a proj-ect manager’s ability to manage key stakeholder risks.

Program Management (Mgmt X472.88 – 3 units) Develop the tools and techniques to manage a large,complex program. This one task covers a vast amountof territory; jetliners, to ships, high-rise construction, to large public work projects. Learn how to take all ofthese individual projects and integrate them togetherfor a successful program. Managing a program can besignificantly more challenging than managing just oneproject. Discover the complexity of programs and howto successfully manage unique groups of multifacetedprojects so that all elements finish within a pre-deter-mined order and are integrated with one another. Prerequisite: Project managers with at least five yearsof working experience.
