IRN-BRU can design - colours

Royal blue Blue Light blueImperial blue

The can will stay the same colour as it currently is in this picture, with a stripe going down the side in one of the shades featured on the right.

I will be using blue because I want to stick with IRN-BRU’s colour scheme and identity, but I do not want to use orange because I am aiming for a more mature design with this product, and I feel orange is difficult to include in that fashion unless used in a small amount.

One of the fonts I am contemplating using for the design on the can is called Bebas Neue. The font is clearly defined and very easy to read even at a lower font size because it is fixed-width. One issue I have is that I am dissatisfied with how the 32 looks as I feel as though it needs to stand out more for it to be clear it is different to a regular can of IRN-BRU. A fix for this may be to add a small stroke of a different colour - most likely orange - in Photoshop.

Here I have tested a font called Florencesans black, which is a Sans Serif font that I thought may look good in lower case. From the evidence above, I can see that when used in any font size below 24, there are issues with readability. Overall I think the level of clarity is poor in comparison to Bebas Neue. For the 32 I have used another font called Licenz Plate, I think it looks good on its own but when paired up with the main text there are issues with size.

Here I have used a font called Soolidium. I chose to test it because I wanted something a little different form the ones I had previously tested to see if my choice of going with some bold and clear was the correct decision. Though I prefer this to Florencesans black I still prefer Bebas Neue to both of them. For the 32 I have tried to stray even further from my original idea by going with something that has an effect on it - the font is called HARD ROCK. I am wanting the 32 to stand out more to make it clear this drink is different to the regular IRN-BRU and although I do not think it goes very well with Soolidium I think it has the potential to look very good when used with other fonts.

Here I have tried 8 different combinations that I could possibly use for the main design on my can. These range from the simple (4), to the designs that you find easiest to identify with IRN-BRU (6). The design I personally favoured before doing this test was number 7, but after conducting the test and receiving feedback from my peers I have found number 6 to be the favourite. My least favourite would have to be number 2 because having the ‘32’ in black against a royal blue background almost creates a shadow effect when you look at it for a prolonged period of time which is uneasy on the eye.

As I was confident with my choice of colour scheme, I decided to try out different versions of the 32 to try and find one which offered me something different and eye-catching without deterring anyone who see’s it first hand.

After testing out 4 different versions of the 32, I have discovered which ones I am keen on and which ones I definitely won’t use. The first one that stood out poorly was number 2, I think it looks very messy and does not fit in with my original plan at all. Number 1 is my second least favourite, though I do still think it looks good. The reason I am not going to use it is because I need the 32 to stand out from the original font. This leaves me with 3 and 4. I like both of these because they are reminiscent of the number you would see on NASCAR’s and NFL journeys, and these are things I associate with speed, high energy, and intensity – all things you might look for from an energy drink. I have decided to go with number 3 because I believe it looks slightly more stylish and fits within the boundaries of the blue stripe more kindly. I also think the 3D effect helps it stand out on it’s own from the other colours.

The fonts I decided to look for were those reminiscent of fonts you would see in comic books, that provide some kind of feeling of intensity and fun. My favourites here are Go Boom! and BADABOOM, which I think would look great in an italic style.
