• Now you need to decide whether you

want to install MobyDick virtually or into

users, virtual is simpler as it involves no

hardware expenditure)

• Pre-installed Server based solutions are

MobyDick Virtual Installation Guide

In order to install MobyDick on a Virtual Machine, you

will need VM software. We recommend either VM

Fusion or as in this example, the Open Source software

Oracle VirtualBox.

If you would like assistance with the VMware Fusion

setup and installation process please see click on the

video link.

If your are installing into a Hardware environment then

please skip this step and go to starting the installation.

Open your VM and select new which will open the

operating system description dialogue.

Give your system and name and change the OS type to

Linux and change the version to Debian (either 64bit or

32bit depending on your download).

You are now ready to proceed to the next step.

In this step of the installation process you will be able to

change the amount of memory available. As default

most VMs are set to 512MB, which may not be

sufficient for your requirements.

For the community version we recommend a minimum

of 1GB for operational versions. For testing purposes

512MB is sufficient.

Greater amounts may be necessary depending on your

requirements.

Having confirmed the appropriate amount of

memory, you will now be promoted to setup a Virtual

Hard Disk.

Therefore, select “Create a Virtual hard drive now”.

Note that the recommended HD size is 8GB (VirtualBox

– 20GB with VM Fusion). Should this not be sufficient

you will have the ability to change this at a later point.

Confirm this action by pressing the “Create” button.

You will now be promoted to choose your HD file type.

As we downloaded an ISO image file, you need to

select the first option VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image).

With VirtualBox, you can simplify this process by

pressing “hide description” which will then change the

screen to a where you can adjust all the options within

one mask (avoiding 2 additional screens) – this is also

where you can adjust the HD Volume capacity size.

Confirm all settings through the “create” button.

The partitioning and module loading process takes

about a minute and as soon as it is finished you can

start with the setting up the finer details of your

MobyDick Appliance.

The first thing to do is confirm your time zone.

By default MobyDick will show Berlin/Europe as its

time zone, but you can change this be selecting no and

going through the list as show opposite.

You will now be promoted to enter a password for

your MobyDick appliance.

As per normal with passwords, you will be prompted to

re-enter your chosen password in the next screen.

Default user name is admin.

The password needs to be a minimum of 8 characters

and note to the wise – check which keyboard layout

your VM uses, as this password will also be set as your

password into the web user interface and if the layout

is different to your actual keyboard you may encounter

problems here. An example of this is with QWERTY vs

QWERTZ in Germany – caused me no end of

problems.

This is one of the final steps of the MobyDick

installation process.

In order to access the Web UI you will need to setup

the network settings with which you wish to operate

MobyDick.

In general it is a good idea to use a static IP address in

order to access the MobyDick later on. However,

depending on your own network infrastructure you may

need to set up a DHCP server – which you will have to

do later anyway when you want to start adding

devices.

If you have setup the network correctly and the

installation process has been completed you will then

be shown the screen opposite.

Providing the Interface mask is showing a green UP as

opposed to a red DOWN, then you have now finished

installing and setting up your Virtual MobyDick and it is

now time to configure your MobyDick via the web

UI, which will be reachable under the IP address you

setup using a browser of your choice and the default

username admin in combination with the password you

entered during the earlier stages in the install process.

That’s it for now – happy VoIPing
