Human Experience

Philippe Poullain was General Manager of a Family Garden Center Group and nursery producer In Canada and France

By meeting Guy Gauthier we decided to merge our forces in order to develop not only waterproof roofing, but to reintroduce gardens, trees, shrubs and vegetables in the city to heal the world and make it a better place and fight climate changes.

Page 5: MIDEX International presentation

Goals Develop awareness about the versatily of

the solution to consumers and profesionnals.

Develop a sustainable waterproof roofing system.

Offer plants supplying for gardenroofs Fight against overconsuming construction

materials and waste. Fight against global warming by

reintroducing plants in cities heart

Why Midex is Unique? MONOSHELL= no joints, therefore not

water leaking and a great resistance TOTAL SEALING DURABLE= the fibre

glass can resist more than 100 years it is not damaged, useless to replace it every 12 years like the other membranes

ECOLOGICAL= uses much less materials, because it does not need multiple layers of products for the sealing and by what it does not change it every 12 years

Page 28: MIDEX International presentation

Versatile/Light/Waranty

VERSATILE= fibre glass can apply to varied shapes from the ground to the ceiling

LIGHT= The sealing membrane is only 4 millimeters, it is thus fine and light.

WARANTY= We give 30 years of waranty in Canada, and it is transferable if you sell your property.

Page 29: MIDEX International presentation

Insurance and Water issues REDUCTION OF INSURANCE COST= we

work on reducing insurance cost since we do not have disaster thanks to our total sealing

WATER RECOVERY= as there is no contact with tar or other petrochemical products, the rainwater is almost pure and could be re-used for the watering of the plants.

RETENTION OF RAINWATER= at the time of a storm, 50% of the rain can be retained by the garden roof. Therefore cities doesn’t have to spend millions to increase water pipes due to soil proofing.

Page 30: MIDEX International presentation

Hardness/Flexibility/Fire and Acids resistance HARDNESS= our product resists a force of impact of

160 tons to the meter and can even be armoured with Kevlar or carbon fibre.

FLEXIBILITY= the product by its grid and its specific texture resists to strong thermal amplitudes, and different weights like the one from snow in Canada.

FIRE RESISTANCE= Fibre glass does not burn. ULC-S107-M 1980 « Standard Method of test for fire resistance of roof covering materials » class C.

RESISTANCE to GREASY SUBSTANCES AND ACIDS= this is very appreciated in agribusiness industry because before other membranes found themselves perforated by the lactic acids.

Page 31: MIDEX International presentation

Sun/Salt and Calcium/Colors and Snow Resistance to the ULTRA-VIOLETS= what allows a better

insulation and a weak change of color of the membrane in time. Reflectivity up to 78% with white membranes, that allows us to have one LEED point.

Résistance to SALT and CALCIUM= within the concrete framework like tunnels or bridges, the glass fibre MIDEX® protects the concrete from the calcium and salt attacks which can degrade the long-term structure.

Choice of COLORS= within the framework of a standard roof without garden, there exists a large variety of color of membrane available. (over 3000)

AVOID SNOW REMOVAL= For the vegetalized roofs, in zone of strong snowfall, as the ground is never cold in-depth it makes it possible snow to melt by the lower part and thus avoids the snow clearance.

Page 32: MIDEX International presentation

LEED/Budget and Time flexibility LEED Points= The realization of a vegetable roof

cumulated with the use of the glass fibre roof MIDEX® can make it possible to obtain up to 3 points LEED according to the projects.

FLEXIBILITY OF THE BUDGET=If your budget is more restricted you can start with a roof standard terrace and then carry out an insulation or better by finishing the vegetalization of your roof.

FLEXIBILITY IN TIME = Contrary to traditional membranes which require to carry out the vegetable roof immediately, MIDEX® will be able to await the date of your choice for the realization of your garden and you will be able in the interval to use your terrace.

Page 33: MIDEX International presentation

Best applications Over complicated frames such as domes or

circular frames For roofs with acids or lubricates, like

restaurant or agroalimentary businesses To protect concrete, tunnels, bridges… Hospitals, hermetic room, cloackrooms, kitchen

everywhere germs are difficult to eliminate Security purpose, army, bulletproof walls or

roof, sound proofing. Desert area with water recycling Places with intensive use of the roof

Page 34: MIDEX International presentation

Advantage compare to concrete the concrete is porous and disaggregates Difficulties to find where the water

problem comes from You can walk on fibreglass after 30

minutes You can build the roof till -5 degrees Fibreglass stops the roots Concrete does not resist to salt and

calcium or acids.

Page 35: MIDEX International presentation

Advantage compare to soft shells You can walk anywhere in the roof with

heavy materials It is monocoque there are no joints It has a better fire resistance and you can

walk on during a fire The reflectivity is better (up to 78%) It wont disaggregate and it resists to roots It can be recycled Water is not contaminated with rubber

Page 36: MIDEX International presentation

Advantage to tar

Reflectivity is better, it won’t accumulate heat

Can be recycled Can walk everywhere and find exactly

where the problem might be You do not have to use fire to install it so

no risk of fire No risk of firebrands The water is not contaminated with petrol

European Agreement

Qualiconsult famous french office of control went to Canada in order to realize an advise on process

We are able to realize 5 test projects in France

We Work on the French Science and Technique Building Center Homologation for begining of 2011

Page 38: MIDEX International presentation

Weather limits We do not make fibreglass roofs when it is wet,

or rainning

The wood as to be perfectly dry.

No application over 40 degrees

No application under -5 degrees

The roof can be used after 30 minutes

Page 39: MIDEX International presentation

Why doing Garden Roofing? For the Owner :

Durabilitya vegetable roof in general makes it possible to double the life expectancy of your roof because the ground protects from the rays Ultra-violets and the thermal amplitudes.

Reduction of Heating and Climatisation cost. A black conventional roof with asphalts or bitumen stores heat during summer and can reach the double of the ambient air.

The vegetable roof being fresher it becomes useless to consume water and energy to air-condition the building. Air-conditioning is done itself by the inertia of the temperature of the ground. With a good insulation like the insulation of process MIDEX®, to suit you to be able to also save in winter, because heat will remain inside and thus will enable you to save up to 30% in expenditure of heating. The fall of 1 degree Celsius of heat or air-conditioning allows a fall from approximately 5% of the consumption of energy.

.

Page 40: MIDEX International presentation

Reduce noise and increase property value

NOISE REDUCTION In the majority of the vegetable roofs we have a layer of 15 cm ground, which makes it possible to lower the sound volume of more than 40 decibels.

INCREASE YOUR PROPERTY VALUE AND SPACE = By using a flat roof for your house you can double your livable space without paying of tax. Being given the increasing price of the real estate and the scarcity of the grounds especially downtown, it is clear that to have a garden on the roof is a significant advantage within the framework of a better valorization of your good.

Page 41: MIDEX International presentation

Advantage for Earth

Fight against climate changes If the cities had at least 10% of garden roofs it would lower the temperature of the cities of more than 1 degree and without counting the saving of heating and air-conditioning.

Better Way of Life It is proven that the contact with nature reduces the stress, therefore the diseases in addition to improving the urban landscape

Page 42: MIDEX International presentation

AIR quality and infrastructure costs

Better Air Quality A surface as small as 15 square meters (110 square feet) vegetalized produces enough oxygen for a family of four people for one day.

Infrastructure costs

With vegetable roofs one can control rainwater and retain more than 50% of the quantity of water poured by a storm. So we do not have to invest in bigger drains

As the water can be treated directly on your premise you can also save on your water invoice.

Page 43: MIDEX International presentation

Construction savings

Reduction of construction waste

If we do not have to replace the roof regularly, we save our resources and just like limit the gas emission and greenhouse effect.

Page 44: MIDEX International presentation

Prices

Prices has to be reevaluated for each project regarding accesibility, wether its an old or new building…and project size

Average prices for the insulated complex = 180 to 220 euros per square meter.

Average prices for ventilated roof = 90 to 130 euros per square meter.

Conclusion

Our methods of constructions have an direct impact on the health of planet

The resources are not endless and we must propose sustainable materials

We must fight against climate warming by the reintroduction of plant in cities
