Managing Gas Pressure Systems in ArcGIS
PG&E Overview
• Incorporated in California in 1905
• Serves about 15 million people throughout a 70,000 square-‐mile service area
• More than 42,000 miles of gas distribution pipeline
• 4.3 million natural gas customer accounts
Gas Pressure Systems at PG&E
Historically:• Also known as Hydraulically Independent Systems (HIS)
• Managed through Synergi (Synergee) modeling software
• Gas Pressure Systems were not modeled in GIS -‐ why bother migrating?
Business Problem
How do we store the information about the Gas Pressure System?
• Gas Pressure System information is loaded into a table in GD GIS
Business Problem
How do we define the boundaries of the Gas Pressure System on the map?
• The Regulator Station has an attribute that contains the Gas Pressure System name
• The first segment of Distribution Main out of the Regulator Station is identified through an attribute
Business Problem
How do we make sure the Gas Pressure System is correctly configured?
• Manually -‐ the user can choose to validate the trace using the core tools
• Background Process
Automated QA/QC
Automated Checks
• The system runs a process on a nightly basis to trace designated Gas Pressure System Systems
• If the trace completes successfully, the system:
• Calculates the total length of Distribution Main
• Populates the Gas Pressure System Name on the participating Main and Service
Automated QA/QC
• The system automatically checks for the following conditions:
• Increase in Gas Pressure System size
• Decrease in Gas Pressure System size
• No related Regulator Station
• If the trace encounters features associated with another Gas Pressure System
• The system will populate the Review Status field when the automated process is completed
Review Process
• The system sends a nightly email summarizing any Gas Pressure Systems that need review
Technical Specifications
• Windows Service written in ArcObjects
• Multi-‐process• Utilize CPUs on machine
• Uses core ArcFM trace functions• Consistent with the trace functions in ArcMap
• Easy upgrade path to Facility Network
• Regenerates on different conditions• Regenerate attribute
• Previously determined schedule (configurable)
• Updates made once per day• Staging table holds all updates to be made
• Updates made during downtime to minimize conflicts/impact
Deploying Across the Enterprise
Desktop, Web and Mobile
Search for a Gas Pressure System
Deploying Across the Enterprise3 layers• Service, Distribution Main, Distribution Main (Large Scale)• Colors are manually set
Deploying Across the Enterprise
• Joined Main/Service feature classes to GasPressureSystem table
Realized User Benefits
• Accessibility – Allows anyone with access to the GD GIS Web Viewer to see Gas Pressure Systems
• Increased Awareness – Expanded the ability to review and understand of Gas Pressure Systems to all GD GIS users
• Issue Identification – Provided insight into the current configuration of Gas Pressure Systems and Identified several opportunities for improvement in the current process
• Integration – The application is designed to be expandable, and should allow us to move Cathodic Protection, Emergency Zone Management, and Leak Survey to a similar model
