WHAT IS INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT)?
Internet of Things (IOT), is a global system of IP-connected computer networks, devices, actuators, machines and sensors, assimilating this physical world with the virtual world of the internet and software, to enable companies and consumers to build and have the benefit of new services that are found on web-based business models.

THE INCEPTION OF INTERNET OF THINGS
1999 –Keven Ashton executive director of the Auto-ID Center coined the term “Internet of Things”.
2002 –Chana Schoenberger and Bruce Upbin published “The Internet of Things” in Forbes stating “Stores have eyes. Now they’re getting brains. Soon tiny wireless chips stuck on shampoo bottles and jeans will track all that you wear and buy.”
2000 –LG announced world’s first connected Refrigerator.

THE INCEPTION OF INTERNET OF THINGS
2010 –Google debuted a self-driving vehicle project, which served as a major milestone in the development of connected cars.
–Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) was introduced.
2008 –The IPSO Alliance was formed to promote IP connections across networks of ‘smart’ objects and to enable the internet of things.
2005 –A team of students and faculty members, led by Massimo Banzi at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea in Ivrea, Italy developed the Arduino, a single-board microcontroller based on ATmega8.

2011 –IPv6 is launched. The new protocol expanded the number of objects that can connect to the web by introducing 2128 (approximately 340 undecillion or 340, 282, 366, 920, 938, 463, 374, 607, 431, 768, 211, 456) IP addresses.
THE INCEPTION OF INTERNET OF THINGS
2013 –Google glass was released to developers
–Qualcomm with other tech firm forms AllSeen Alliance to develop an open framework for IOT.
2014 –Chip maker Intel and other high tech firms set up a competing group to AllSeen Alliance to promote an open framework for the Internet of Things called the Open Interconnect Consortium.

The IoT will help companies create new value streams for customers, institute processes that speed time to market, triage market performance, and respond rapidly to customer needs.
The IoT can help companies create new services and new revenue streams on top of traditional products, e.g., vending machine vendors offering inventory management to those who supply the goods in the machine.
With IoT, organizations can capture more data about their processes and products in a more timely fashion to create new revenue streams, improve operational efficiency, and increase customer loyalty.
Access to information from autonomous end points, as today’s smart grid already supplies to utility companies, will allow organizations to make on-the-fly decisions on pricing, logistics, sales, and support deployment, etc.
The IoT will make it easier for enterprises to see across the business regardless of location, including tracking effectiveness and efficacy from one end of the supply chain to the other.
