• Mälardalen has became one of the globally leading regions for manufacturing of powertrains for heavy vehicles. Scania has concentrated the development and manufacturing of powertrains to Södertälje, Volvo have their manufacturing of powertrains in Köping, Eskilstuna and Skövde. There are several other companies in the region as Sandvik, Bombardier, GKN and LEAX.
• XPRES – Excellence in production engineering research, one of the Swedish strategic research areas (SRA), started 2010 with faculty funding of MSEK 19 per year to KTH, MDH and SWEREA.
• The gear manufacturing companies in Sweden have started GearTech in Köping to provide education
and training of staff.
• A cluster for design and development of transmissions for heavy vehicles started 2011 in co-operation between Scania, Volvo, KTH and Chalmers.
• MDH started an industrial graduate school 2012 called Innofacture with15 PhD students from companies in Mälardalen. Another 9 PhD students will enrol 2014.
