Problem: How can I improve manufacturing efficiency? Customers: Industrial Manufacturers

Needs to address: Minimize machinery maintenance cost Optimize manufacturing processes

Traditional Solution

The user(the industrial manufacturer) buys the equipment upfront and can face high maintenance costs. Different suppliers may be involved in selling and supporting the equipment.

IoT Solution & Benefits

A solution would be to use a remote monitoring solution powered by IoT in the manufacturing plants. The industrial manufacturer pays for the equipment and maintenance to the IoT company.

The solution would provide important, real-time critical data such as machine downtime, production metrics, quality and much more.

The solution would make use of sensors in the machines, data visualization and analytic tools and mobile/web apps.

IoT Solution and Benefits

The benefits of such a system would be: Predictive maintenance of equipment. Optimization of energy usage. Monitoring of assets remotely. Decrease safety hazards in the workplace. Insights for decision makers based on data science and easy to

understand real-time reports

Technologies

Feature Requirement

Comment

Network Area Wide A wide area network is required because the remote monitoring solution will need to send data to remote monitoring headquarters.

Spectrum Dedicated The connectivity service should be reliable.Battery Life Short/N/A Power can be generated by generators at the industrial plant.Connectivity cost

Medium Due to the type of technology being used.

Module cost High It being an industrial application means that the cost won’t be an issue as there will be cost savings in other areas.

Bandwidth Low to High The data being sent can be from low to high depending on what’s being monitored.

Technologies: 4G/3G

Business modelsThe suitable business model for such a solution would be Product-as-a-Service.The IoT company charges a recurring fee to the industrial manufacturer. This fee includes the use of the equipment and its maintenance. The equipment is owned by the IoT company, who by actively monitoring it, may pre-empt potentially serious issues resulting in expensive maintenance.

Operational Issues & policy topics

The following would be the operational considerations: Interference from other wireless technologies in the area. Network Coverage Machine failure/malfunction which could not only lead to loss of

money but loss of life as well in the case of workers being injured.

The following policy areas would be considered: Privacy and confidentiality of the manufacturer’s data being handled

by the system.
