• originally developed for military aviation• can be found in many cars, trains and in a wide variety of experimental

• A Microsoft’s patent - windshield HUD’s in cars that display information from temperature to email.

• we’ll even have windshields with enhanced night vision, or even customizable widgets.

including a pair of specs being developed by Brother

• eye-gesture glasses developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems.

Gestural Interfaces

•recognize human body language instead of archaic data entry

• intuitive, user friendly, and “fun“

•can learn unique handwriting patterns and transcribe it into plain text

•a group of scientists is working on a new system that does this without the pen.

•Translate movement captured in a three-dimensional space into inputs on a device (e.g. Nintendo Wii’s motion controllers)

•The PlayStation Motion Controller is Sony PlayStation’s

•Even more exciting is Microsoft Xbox’s Project Natal, uses no controller whatsoever, instead tracking the human body as the means for controls

•Outside of the gaming industry, Toshiba has been developing their own hardware

Augmented Reality

• isn’t limited to navigation only•Applications like Yelp for the iPhone streams reviews of restaurants

•Nokia’s Point and Find allows users to find information about objects by pointing a phone camera

•and other practical ideas may become a reality in the near future e.g. Wikitude Travel Guide – AR browser for Symbian

• typically for navigation (GPS) that can reveal directions on a live video feed of your current location

Neural Based Interfaces

• It works by implanting a small microchip in the brain which analyzes pulses

• The first tweet was sent via brain from the University of Wisconsin’s Neural Interface Lab

• Another company, Braingate, has developed a similar technology that has allowed paralyzed participants to check email, or even play a game of pong using only their mind

• Is still in it’s infant stages - the average user can write at approximately 10 characters per minute• it may allow paralyzed users to someday move certain muscles again, and perhaps

even walk

Voice Based Interfaces with new applications

• Cell phones that recognize basic commands and names

• Video games that respond to speech (“Tom Clancy’s: EndWar” can be controlled entirely by voice)

• We’ve seen some innovative applications thus far:

•MIT recently developed a wheelchair – it also saves detailed maps in memory and can take the user to their desired location via voice command

•Relatively new application includes Google Mobiles “Search by Voice”

•Touch devices in 2010 wont probably get significant share of market

•But in 2011 they will became influental player

•What we create today alive at least one year – we should consider it

•The Main menu loses importance•when user zooms part of a page it becames invisible (!)

•Short and pregnant links, call to action at the place of context•it will be a challenge for usability experts•not whole page but every detail has big impact on design
