What is a functional

specification for?

What should go in it?

(Be brief)

Page 3: functional spec

A functional specification should…

• explain to others (client, manager) what you are aiming to achieve • help to ensure that you never lose sight of your goals

Who will be using it?

What will they be using it for?

Where will it be used?

Why do they want it? Why will they use it?

When will it be used?

You must be able to produce a functional specification that specifies:

• the purpose of the multimedia product, including…

• context• audience

• the information it must supply• how that information will be presented• how the product will be used• how you will judge its effectiveness

• success criteria (measurable)

It is not a static document!

Success criteria

should be

Specific

Measurable

Achievable

Relevant

Time bound

the objective should state exactly what is to be achieved.

an objective should be capable of measurement so that it is possible to determine whether (or how far) it has been achieved

the objective should be realistic given the circumstances in which it is set and the resources available

objectives should be relevant to the people responsible for achieving them

objectives should be set with a time-frame in mind. These deadlines also need to be realistic(this may be more relevant to your project management unit)

Suggested content:

• Target dates • Major functions • Appearance • Performance levels • Accuracy • Reliability • Security • Ease of use • Timings
