Local Winds

• Chinook-a warm wind from the ocean into the interior regions of the interior plains of the U.S.A.

• Mistral - a strong, cold and northwesterly wind that blows from southern France into the Gulf of Lyon.

• Foehn - a type of dry, warm, down-slope wind that occurs in the mountain range.

• Levanter – a local wind on the western coast of the Mediterannean Sea. When it blows moderately or strongly, the levanter causes heavy swells. Usually gentle and damp, the levanter frequently brings clouds and rain. When it brings good weather, it is known as the “levanter blanc”.

• Haboob - a strong sandstorm that occurs along the southern edges of the Sahara, the Sudan

• Brickfielder - a hot and dry wind in the desert of Southern Australia that occurs in the summer season.

• Sirocco – a warm, humid wind occurring over the northern Mediterranean Sea and southern Europe.
