CC’s Role in the Global Commons Movement Some Thoughts on Strategic Perspectives
2
What is Creative Commons great at?
• Providing professional tools for a digital commons
• Creating and maintaining the brand “Creative Commons”
• Coping with its global approach, with political diversity and with the challenge of multiple jurisdictions
3
What could CC further contribute?
1. Developing a chapter strategy
2. Lobbying
3. Consulting
4
(1) Leverage the Global CC network!
• Jurisdiction projects need concrete tasks - a “basket of basics”
• Long-term growth strategy: chapter-model?
• Team up with local heros
5
(2) Lobby more!
• Acknowledge the power of “third parties” in standardization processes
• Current targets: corporations, collecting societies, public knowledge institutions
• Potential targets: municipal, regional and federal governments
• Guidelines for cultural subsidies
• Publicly funded knowledge goods
6
(3) Consult more!
• Officially endorse licenses for particular fields:
• Open Data: CC0/CC-BY
• Open Educational Resources: CC-BY/CC-BY-SA
• …
• Consulting is expensive – should CC certify “CC Consultants”?
