What is Broadband?

The term broadband commonly refers to high-speed Internet access that is always on and faster than the traditional dial-up access.

Broadband services provides higher-speed of data transmission. It allows more content to be carried through the transmission “pipeline.”

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Cable Modem Fibre Optic Wireless Satellite Broadband over Powerlines (BPL)

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)

DSL is a wireline transmission technology that transmits data faster over traditional copper telephone lines already installed to homes and businesses.

Takes advantage of unused frequencies to transmit data.

Requires a modem. Secure Service Speed is affected easily.

Cable Modem Cable modem service enables cable

operators to provide broadband using the same coaxial cables that deliver pictures and sound to your TV set.

It is more efficient than DSL Broadband. Enables the use of VOIP to cut down on

costs. Speed Effective

Fibre Optic Fibre optic broadband works by sending

information as pulses of light through individual optical fibres. 

Fibre optics have less interference than DSL.

Keep the signal strength over much greater distances.

Operate at a higher frequency range.

Wireless Wireless broadband is high-speed Internet

service via wireless technology. It is available in Internet Cafes, local “hot spots” within many cities, private businesses and many homes.

Any computer equipped with wireless capacity within receiving distance can pick up the signal, making the Internet

"portable.“ Speed depends on signal strength

Satellite

Satellite broadband is Internet connectivity provided by satellite, rather than dial-up, DSL or cable service.

The Internet feed is beamed from satellite to a dish installed at the subscriber's home. 

It is more expensive to set up than DSL or cable, and weather can

affect the signal.
