LIGHT DESIGN FOR AS YOU LIKE IT
By
Jose Saucedo
IDEA
The idea of the play
with regards to
Lighting is to give
dimension to the set
and stage.
Actors• The actors must be well lit by a spotlight with
at least 2 or 3 stage lights so that they are not lost in the darker lights setting up the forest scene
VISIBILITY
SHAPES AND FORMS
Mood and Style• The lighting cannot simply be right in front of
the stage or characters, in order to give the tress shadows and the character dimensions lights must be shown above, behind and on their sides
FOCUS AND COMPOSITION
Focus• Is used to let characters slip into place without
being noticed • It is also used to distract the audience while a
certain part of the set may be changed
Composition• The forest scene is changed into a large open area • The palace scene is changed into a smaller enclosed
area
MOOD AND STYLE
Mood• The mood is changed from the well lit bright palace to the
darker shadowed forest area• The forest itself is changed from day to night with brighter and
darker light, maybe using blues and a spotlight for moonlit scenes
• The fight scene also brings out a different mood as it changes the previously bright set to a dim on with corresponding flashing lights
Style• Distinguishes from the realistic regular lights (room light and
sunlight) to the nonrealistic colorful lighting used in the forest
TIME AND PLACE
Palace• Pale lighting inside with yellow lights shows the
inside of a house and the usage of utilities like candles to lighten up a place
Forest• Pale lighting outside shows that the day is early
while dark bluish lighting show night time
RHYTHM
Set switching
• When shifting between scenes it is imperative to have a
certain rhythm to let the audience comfortably
transition from scene to scene
• The bright lights of the palace must slowly fade to a
dim light while entering the forest and after a set light
is established it then can be adjusted to each scene
VISUAL IMAGE AND INFO
Image• The lighting establishes the central themes of
the play as it creates set images of what the play is surrounded around
• ie. the bright palace and colorfully lit forest
Information• It gives you an insight to their lives as the
forest is seen as freedom to the characters while the palace is seen as a prison or a place in need of escape
