OverviewThis PowerPoint presentation will look at tools, equipment and materials used to produce and fix detailed fibrous plaster and cement casts.



Splash brushUsed for applying plaster to moulds.



Small toolUsed for applying material. Use of images is great.

Gauging trowelUsed for applying material.



Joint rules Used for forming mitres.



BusksUsed for cleaning casts.



Tape measureA good quality tape measureis essential for accuratemeasurement.



Chalk line A chalk line is used to provide a straight line to fix rules and cornice.

It will be snapped around theperimeter of a room at wall line and ceiling line.



Cordless drillA screw gun is an essentialtool used in workshops forvarious jobs such asconstructing running mouldsand fixing running rules.

Also used on site for jobssuch as fixing cornice.



Water levelBoth ends of the water level should be held vertically so no water can escape.



Canvas binA canvas bin holds the canvas, which is used to measure and cut.



Hessian scrimCanvas/hessian is awoven fabric of jute.

It comes in a range ofwidths.

Used as reinforcementwhen casting.



Plaster binA fibrous plaster workshopwill have a plaster bin/box.

Usually made from strongmarine plywood.

This is constructed to holdcasting plaster.



Vibrating tablesThese are used to release air locks when cement casting.

Other equipment used in workshops includes slosh tank (used for washing) and lath tank (used for soaking laths).



Laser levelUsed for vertical or horizontal levels



Lath hammerUsed for bruising laths



Top cutters used for cutting tie wireUsed for cutting tie wire.



Box rule used for straightening castsUsed for straightening casts.



MaterialsThe following materials are used in the production of plaster and cement casts:

Sand, cement, lime, French chalk, release agents, casting plaster, autoclaved plaster, canvas, lath, sealants, tie wire, retarders, accelerators, screws, adhesive, epoxy resin, methylated spirits, paraffin, tallow.
