Definition

The process by which humans acquire the capacity to perceive and comprehend language,

as well as to produce and use words and sentences to communicate.

Importance It helps students understand another country’s

culture by giving them a peephole into the traditions and history of that nation.

It deepens the understanding of one’s own language and culture by comparing it to other languages.

It enriches and enhances mental development, especially when introduced at an early age.

It can expand career opportunities by making one more versatile.

How it apply to 21st century education

21st century students have a world of resources and information at their fingers tips:

Example of its application

A lesson that would have students learning language as well as being active is a lesson called,“Bilingual Fun.” Students learn Spanish through a book called Sofía en una aventura por la selva (Sophia’s Jungle Adventure) The book integrates yoga for children into a story in Spanish and creates an amazing language-learning experience.

Role of technology

A Voki is a talking avatar that can be used in the classroom. Using Vokis is a great way to teach and practice new languages. Vokis provide teachers with the opportunity to evaluate students’ use of the language as well as monitor their progress. Teachers can also use Vokis to provide students with examples of how to use the language correctly. Also Voki provides a Voki Classroom for educators.

Vokis can help boost students’ confidence by allowing them to practice speaking skills without standing in front of the class. It would also be beneficial for ELLs by helping them communicate with their classmates more effectively. It allows classrooms from different countries to have conversations, enhancing learning opportunities of various cultures and traditions.
