DESCRIPTION
Additive manufacturing (AM) offers a few major benefits to biomedical applications. To improve the knowledge on AM possibilities, Sirris is organizing two different masterclasses. The first will address the technology, materials used and applications, with experts in the matter explaining all relevant aspects.

1. Case of “Argos” Argos is an 8-month Bordeaux Mastiff of 50kg. He was diagnosed a bilateral hip dysplasia with grade I patella luxation in the right knee.
7 Organized by SIRRIS the 12th of March 2013 Masterclass: Biomedical applications of Additive Manufacturing
1. Case of “Argos” Initially, the surgeon performed a triple pelvis osteotomy on the right side using a standard commercial plate. Only 3 days after the surgical intervention, during the first control, a loosening of fixation screws was detected.
8 Organized by SIRRIS the 12th of March 2013 Masterclass: Biomedical applications of Additive Manufacturing
The proposed measure was to increase the size of the screws from M3.5 to M4.5.
1. Case of “Argos”
9 Organized by SIRRIS the 12th of March 2013 Masterclass: Biomedical applications of Additive Manufacturing
In order to prevent risks of screw loosening, the surgeon sought for a more feasible solution for the left hip side - a customized plate made on EBM
1. Case of “Argos”
10 Organized by SIRRIS the 12th of March 2013 Masterclass: Biomedical applications of Additive Manufacturing
As expected, the revision revealed that the screws on the right hip (commercial plate) started to migrate again while the screws on the left hip customized plate) stood as tight as after the intervention.
1. Case of “Argos”

Fito: - German sheppard - 4-years old - 40kg.
He was hit by a car and suffered a multiple diaphysal fracture with big bone splinters.
2. Case of “Fito”
12 Organized by SIRRIS the 12th of March 2013 Masterclass: Biomedical applications of Additive Manufacturing
• The bone fracture was repaired with a standard titanium plate and 12 screws of M3.5.
• During the intervention, the surgeon noticed that the plate had to be modified by hand to fit the damaged zone.
• Surgeon was modeling the plate with a pair of surgical pliers, and verifying visually that the plate was fitting properly.
2. Case of “Fito”
13 Organized by SIRRIS the 12th of March 2013 Masterclass: Biomedical applications of Additive Manufacturing
• The drawback appeared after only 3 days. • Fito started to limp severely. • An angular deformation in the femoral zone was detected. • The plate suffered a fracture and completely lost its functionality.
2. Case of “Fito”

2. Case of “Fito”
15 Organized by SIRRIS the 12th of March 2013 Masterclass: Biomedical applications of Additive Manufacturing
• The operation was successful. • According to the last news Fito has a normal functionality in the injured leg. • Unfortunately, postoperatory images were never received.
2. Case of “Fito”
16 Organized by SIRRIS the 12th of March 2013 Masterclass: Biomedical applications of Additive Manufacturing
• Baby is a 3-year old Yorkshire Terrier. • Abandoned and found by pro-animal activists in a difficult health conditions. • Admitted in December 2009 presenting a radius-cubital diaphysal oblicuous fracture with severe loss of radiographic density due to osteoporosis and disuse of the leg in question. • Approx. 20-25% of radius-cubital length had been lost.
• A challenging experimental case with few chances of success • No commercially available plate of this size and capable of being adapted to the damaged zone • The surgeon and CIMA researchers decided to design a customized titanium plate.
3. Case of “Baby”
