"China is a greatchallenge to the United
States, and maybe one ofthe most important
challenges,”
"To make sure thatChina doesn't think of
challenging us militarily,we should increase thesize of our military,”

"Of the major and emerging powers, China has thegreatest potential to compete militarily with the United
States and field disruptive military technologies thatcould over time offset traditional U.S. military
advantages absent U.S. counter-strategies."

ACTS 16:22-36
d
and the magistrates ordered [Paul and Silas]to be stripped and beaten. 23After they hadbeen severely flogged, they were thrown
into prison, and the jailer was commandedto guard them carefully.
d
24Upon receiving such orders, he put themin the inner cell and fastened their feet in
the stocks.
d
25About midnight Paul and Silas werepraying and singing hymns to God, and the
other prisoners were listening to them.
d
26Suddenly there was such a violentearthquake that the foundations of the
prison were shaken. At once all the prisondoors flew open, and everybody's chains
came loose.
27The jailer woke up,and when he saw theprison doors open, hedrew his sword and
was about to killhimself because he
thought the prisonershad escaped.
28But Paul shouted,"Don't harm yourself!
We are all here!"
29The jailer called forlights, rushed in andfell trembling beforePaul and Silas. 30He
then brought them outand asked, "Sirs, what
must I do to besaved?"
31They replied,"Believe in the Lord
Jesus, and you will besaved—you and yourhousehold." 32Then
they spoke the word ofthe Lord to him and to
all the others in hishouse.
33At that hour of the night the jailer tookthem and washed their wounds; then
immediately he and all his family werebaptized.
34The jailer brought them into his house andset a meal before them; he was filled with
joy because he had come to believe inGod—he and his whole family.
35When it was daylight, the magistrates sent theirofficers to the jailer with the order: "Release those
men."
36The jailer toldPaul, "The
magistrates haveordered that you
and Silas bereleased. Now youcan leave. Go in
peace."
He [Kerry Brown] told Reuters that a chiefweakness [of China] is deep-seated social
inequality and poverty,
particularly among the hundreds of millionsof migrant workers “on whose sweat, bloodand tears modern China is built” but who
today are disenfranchised
"If you practice exclusion, you riskthe future of your country. You risk
terrorism, violence.”-"Jesús Caldera"
“Tens of thousands of mass protests andriots take place each year in China”
The Games are aboutmuch more than sport,
of course. For oneanalyst, the picture ofChina's Communist
Party basking innational triumph amid
glittering stadiumscould be a "Sputnik
moment”
--akin to the emerging Soviet Union'sstunning launch of a satellite in 1957 - onethat, for many in the West, will inspire as
much fear as admiration.
And yet that picture glosses over thefragility of a nation beset by pollution, energy strains, social unrest and rural
poverty, all of which were laid bare in therun-up to the Games. John Chalmers
