COMING UPThe Buffaloes of West Texas A&M hit the road to begin their final regular season Lone Star Conference road trip on Thursday night as they take on Texas A&M-Kingsville in a big South Central Regional matchup at the Steinke Center with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. in Kingsville.

- SCOUTING THE OPPONENTTEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLEThe Javelinas are led by third year head coach Johnny Estelle who was named the 16th head coach in TAMUK history on April 21, 2014. Estelle played for the Javelinas following by coaching stops at Navarro College and the University of Houston. TAMUK enters the weekend with an overall record of 14-9 with a 7-7 mark in Lone Star Conference play following a 59-77 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday afternoon. The Javelinas are 11-3 inside of the Steinke Center this season. The Javelinas are led offensively by Duan Wright who has gone 86-of-192 from the field including 25-of-80 from behind the arc and 86-of-114 from the free throw line to average 12.3 points per game this season followed by Trey Sumpter with 10.9 points per contest. TAMUK has gone 535-of-1341 (39.9%) from the field this season including 162-of-534 (30.3.%) from deep and 328-of-483 (67.9%) from the free throw line while averaging 35.7 (-2.0) rebounds and 67.8 (+1.6) points per game so far this season. The Buffs lead the all-time series against the Javelinas, 47-23 with WT taking the last eight meetings between the two teams.

- A LOOK BACKMSU RECAPWest Texas A&M junior guard David Chavlovich scored 30 points and the Buffs took over in the second half as they outlasted the rival Mustangs of Midwestern State, 80-74 in front of the biggest home crowd of the season in a Highway 287 Challenge Cup matchup at the First United Bank Center in Canyon on Saturday afternoon.

West Texas A&M went 25-of-55 (45.5%) from the floor including 8-of-26 (30.8%) from long range and 22-of-25 (88%) from the free throw line to go along with 33 rebounds (10 offensive, 23 defensive), 15 assists, 17 turnovers, four blocks and seven steals. WT was led by Chavlovich with 30 points followed by Skyler O’Laughlin (17) and Jordan Evans (13) in double-figures while Chavlovich led the way with seven rebounds on the night. The Mustangs went 28-of-69 (40.6%) from the field including 9-of-26 (34.6%) from deep and 9-of-14 (64.3%) from the charity stripe with 39 rebounds (19 offensive, 20 defensive), 16 assists, 16 turnovers, four blocks and seven steals. MSU was led by Neel with 21 points followed by Magnus with 16 and Pat Smith with 13 while Richards grabbed eight rebounds in the loss.

LAST MEETING WITH TAMUK (JAN. 14, 2017)The then #15 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M had four players in double-figures as WT moved to 11-0 inside of the First United Bank Center in a 80-65 win over the Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville in Lone Star Conference action on Saturday in Canyon.

The Buffs went 24-of53 (45.3%) from the floor including 6-of-25 (24%) from deep and 26-of-34 (76.5%) from the free throw line to go along with 40 rebounds (eight offensive, 32 defensive), 13 assists, 12 turnovers, five blocks and seven steals. Walton led the way with 18 points as the junior went 4-of-8 from the field and 9-of-11 from the stripe followed by Golightly Jr. (13), Evans (13) and Prince (10) in double figures while Evans grabbed eight rebounds.

NCAA REGIONAL RANKINGS (FEB. 15)Tarleton State sits atop of the regional rankings followed by Colorado School of Mines, WT, UT Permian Basin, Fort Lewis, Cameron, Texas A&M-Commerce, Colorado State-Pueblo, Regis and Texas A&M-Kingsville. The top eight teams in the South Central Region will take part in the Regional Tournament taking place on March 11-14 at the top overall seed, the winners of the three conference tournaments will receive an automatic bid with the last five spots being filled by at-large selections.

NABC DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL (FEB. 14)The Buffs enter the week with an 21-6 overall record with a 9-5 mark in Lone Star Conference play. Northwest Missouri State picked up all 16 of the possible first places votes for a total of 400 points followed by Fairmont State (374), Indiana, Pa. (370), Bellarmine (341), Cal Baptist (334), Kutztown (315), West Liberty (301), Hawai’i Pacific (285), Tarleton State (273) and Queens, N.C. (248).

The South Central Region was represented by Tarleton State (#9), Fort Lewis (#11), Colorado School of Mines (#22), West Texas A&M (RV) and UT Permian Basin (RV).

HOME SWEET HOMEWest Texas A&M hits the road for a two game road trip following a pair of LSC home wins this past weekend, the Buffs are a perfect 13-0 at home this season. Junior guard David Chavlov-ich ranks sixth in 3-pt field goal attempts (228), 10th in field goal attempts (418) and 17th in total points (535).

Tom Brown was hired on April 16, 2014, as the 17th head coach in WT men’s basketball history.

In just two short years Brown has turned around the West Texas A&M University Basketball Program. Brown led the team to its first 20+ win season since 2010-11. The Buffs were picked to finish 5th in the LSC this past season and despite a pre-season, season ending injury to sophomore starter Carl White the team still managed to finish 2nd in the LSC with an overall record of 21-10. The 2nd place finish is the highest since the conference was split North/South. The Buffs continued to battle minor injuries throughout the year but every player that was called on would step up. Under Brown’s di-rection the team had some very strong individual performances. WT sophomore guard David Chav-lovich led the way. For his outstanding play David was named an NABC All-American, the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year and 1st Team All-LSC selection. Sophomore Jordan Evans (playing in his first season) received honorable mention All-LSC acclaim. The Buffs again were dominate in the classroom as the team GPA exceeded a 3.0 for the year.

2015-16 the Buffs set a new record in the class-room. The team recorded the highest GPA for Men’s Basketball in a season.

Coach Brown inherited a WT team that won two games in the LSC and 10 games overall in 2013-14. Brown had to start from scratch in late April, the team had three seniors and one walkon redshirt freshman. Just three student-athletes saw playing time from the previous year and the team was picked to finish last in the Lone Star Confer-ence Preseason Poll. However, under Brown West Texas A&M University finished the season 5th in the LSC and posted a 17-12 overall record. The Buffs made the LSC Tournament as the fifth seed. There were some individual accolades as well, all three of the returning seniors improved on their scoring average from the previous season. Tez Dumars surpassed Maurice Cheeks in WT All-Time scoring and finished his career ranked 4th All-Time in scoring at WT. David Chavlovich was the squads leading scorer, 2nd Team All-Conference Perform-er and the Freshman of the Year in the LSC as he averaged 16.5 points per contest to go along with 93 assists and 30 steals.

In 2014-15, the Buffs set a new record in the classroom. The team recorded the highest GPA for Men’s Basketball in a season.

Tom was the driving force as the Associate Head Coach and head recruiter in the most successful Division II men’s basketball program in recent history at Winona State University. The Warriors won the NCAA Division II National Cham-pionship in 2006 and 2008 and finished as the National Finalist in 2007. During that span, Winona State posted an unprecedented 105-6 record. WT Assistant Coach Quincy Henderson played for Coach Brown from 2005-2008. Quincy’s record as a collegiate player at WSU was 105-6.

Named Division II Bulletin’s ‘Program of the Decade’ for 2000-2009, WSU set a NCAA Division II record with 57 consecutive wins, a run that began on Jan. 13, 2006, and didn’t end until the national title game on Mar. 24, 2007. The 2007-08 Warrior squad won a NCAA record 38 games.

An excellent recruiter and teacher, Brown recruited and developed some of the best players in the nation with three National Player of the Year recipients, along with seven first team All-America honorees. 11 players total have earned All-America status including WT Sopho-more David Chavlovich. Brown has coached five NSIC Most Valuable Players, seven NSIC Defen-sive Players of the Year and two Elite Eight Most Valuable Players.

Brown is doing it again at WT as David Chav-lovich has earned both Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in the best Division II Confer-ence in the Nation, the Lone Star Conference.

Brown attended and played basketball (1988-1992) and baseball (1991) at Winona State University. He finished his Warrior career ranked fifth in program history in scoring, second in assists and first in steals. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1993 in physical education and completed his master’s degree in education in 1998.

He and his wife Dr. Trisha Brown are the proud parents of three children, TJ, Zach and Ella. Dr. Brown is currently an Instructor and works in the Sports & Exercise Science Department at West Texas A&M.

ORANGE, CA - West Texas A&M opened up their 2016-17 campaign in style as five different Buffs scored in double-figures to lead WT to an 86-72 season opening win over the Azusa Pacific Cougars to open up the CCA Division II Tipoff Classic at the Santia-go Canyon College Athletics Com-plex in Orange, California.

The Buffs went 28-of-64 (43.8%) from the floor including 10-of-24 (41.7%) from deep and 20-of-28 (71.4%) from the charity stripe to go along with 37 rebounds (nine offensive, 28 defen-sive), 13 assist, seven turnovers, two blocks and nine steals. Evans led the way for WT with 20 points followed by Chavlovich (16), Walton (14), White (13), and Quaid (12) in double-digits while Quaid ended the game with 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Azusa Pacific went 23-of-57 (40.4%) from the field including 9-of-26 (34.6% from long range and 17-of-23 (73.9%) from the free throw line to go along with 40 rebounds (10 offensive, 30 defensive), 13 assists, 20 turnovers, two blocks and four steals. Schreiber led all players with 25 points on the afternoon followed by Peterson with 14 and Kutlesic with 13.

ORANGE, CA - West Texas A&M junior guard Jordan Evans scored 20 points for the second straight contest as the Buffs shot 50 percent from the floor in an 83-70 win over St. Cloud State during the CCA Division II Tipoff Clas-sic at the Santiago Canyon College Athletics Complex in Orange, Califor-nia.

The Buffs were led offensively by Ev-ans with his second straight 20-point performance followed by White with 17 and Chavlovich with 15. Walton, Chavlovich and White grabbed six rebounds each while Chavlovich dished out five steals. WT went 29-of-58 (50%) from the floor including 11-of-25 (44%) from deep and 14-of-28 (50%) with 36 rebounds (nine offen-sive, 27 defensive), 17 assists, 13 turn-overs, two blocks and three steals. The Huskies were led by Davis with 23 points followed by Scottie Stone with 16 while Davis grabbed eight rebounds on the night. SCSU went 22-of-61 (36.1%) from the floor including 7-of-21 (33.3%) from long range and 19-of-26 (73.1%) from the free throw line to go along with 42 rebounds (15 offensive, 27 defensive), 11 assists, 16 turnovers, five blocks and five steals.
