COMING UPThe #11 Buffs jump back into Lone Star Conference play on Thursday night as they take their 10-game win streak on the road to Wichita Falls, Texas for a Highway 287 Challenge Cup matchup with Midwestern State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m.

- SCOUTING THE OPPONENTMIDWESTERN STATENelson Haggerty enters his sixth season at the helm after he was tabbed as the program’s 14th head coach in April of 2011. He led the Mustangs to the NCAA Elite Eight during his first season in Wichita Falls in 2011-12 and MSU has made the NCAA Postseason in all five of Haggerty’s seasons at the helm. The Mustangs enter the new year with an overall record of 8-4 with a 1-3 mark in LSC play following a 73-68 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville back on December 19th in Wichita Falls. MSU is led offensively by Brandon Neel who has gone 53-of-128 from the floor including 11-of-37 from deep and 21-of-35 from the line to average 11.5 points per game to go along with 5.6 rebounds. The Mustangs have gone 344-of-790 (43.5%) from the field including 86-of-264 (32.6%) from deep and 164-of-240 (68.3%) from the free throw line while averaging 41.9 rebounds and 78.2 points per contest. The Mustangs lead the all-time series against the Buffs, 32-31 with MSU taking the last three meetings between the two teams. WT is 5-17 all-time in Wichita Falls, dropping eight straight to the Mustangs on the road.

- A LOOK BACKOCU RECAPWest Texas A&M junior guard David Chavlovich scored a career high 36 points and moved into third place on WT’s all-time scoring list as the #14 Buffaloes started fast and never looked back in a 95-63 win over the NAIA’s #5 Stars of Oklahoma City on New Year’s Eve at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.

Chavlovich finished the game with a career high 36 points to match the highest point total by a Lone Star Conference player this season, it also ties for 10th all-time for the most points scored by a Buff in a single-game with Cedrick Wilbon (1/8/96) and Simmie Hill (1968, 1969). The junior moved into third place on WT’s scoring list as he went 9-of-19 from the floor, 6-of-10 from deep and 12-of-12 from the free throw line followed by J. Evans and Walton with 10 points each while Quaid grabbed 10 rebounds in the win.

WT went 29-of-65 (44.6%) from the floor including 12-of-30 (40%) from deep and 25-of-29 (86.2%) from the free throw line to go along with 47 rebounds (15 offensive, 32 defensive), 14 assists, 14 turnovers, four blocks and seven steals.

LAST MEETING WITH MSU (FEB. 10, 2016)Chavlovich scored a team high 25 points as the Arlington native became a member of the 1,000 point club but it wasn’t enough as the Buffs fell to the rival #25 Mustangs of Midwestern State, 84-75 in front of 2,600 fans at D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The Buffs went 19-of-29 (38.8%) from the floor in the game including 9-of-27 (33.3%) from deep and 28-of-40 (70%) from the free throw line to go along with 35 total rebounds (12 offensive, 23 defensive), 13 assists, 25 fouls, 18 turnovers, seven blocks and five steals. Chavlovich went 7-of-19 from the floor including 5-of-14 from deep to score a team high 25 points followed by Jeff Bonner with 17 to go along with 11 rebounds for the double-double.

MOVING ON UPJunior guard David Chavlovich is quickly making his way up WT’s all-time career scoring list as the Arlington native has scored 1,417 points in his 75 career games in Maroon & White to average an impressive 18.9 points per contest. Chavlovich’s career high 36 points against Oklahoma City moved the guard to third place all-time as he passed Price Brookfield (1940-42 / 1,406). Chavlovich currently sits 23 points behind Reggie Ramey (1973-76 / 1,440) for second place all-time.

NABC DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL (JAN. 3)WT currently hold the most wins in any level of NCAA Basketball as the Buffs jumped three spots to #11 in the newest National Basket-ball Coaches Association (NABC) Top-25 Poll announced on Tues-day afternoon by the association’s offices in Kansas City, Missouri.

Northwest Missouri State picked up 12 of the possible 16 first place votes for a total of 396 points to sit atop of the poll followed by Fair-mont State (four first place, 388), Queens (364), West Liberty (347), Angelo State (323), Saginaw Valley State (321), Cal Baptist (301), Wheeling Jesuit (276), Tarleton State (268) and Barry (242) to round out the top ten.

STARTING OFF STRONGWith a 15-1 mark, the Buffs are off to the best start to a season in almost 20 years. The 1997-98 squad started the season 15-0 before dropping back-to-back LSC road contests to Texas A&M-Com-merce and Texas A&K-Kingsville, that team ended up claiming the South Central Regional Championship before falling in the Elite Eight to UC-Davis (55-63).

NATIONALLY SPEAKINGWT leads DII Basketball in two offensive categories: free throws attempted (464) and free throws made (332) while ranking second in total rebounds (627), 3-pt field goal attempts (448) and total 3-pt field goals made (162). Junior guard David Chavlovich ranks third in 3-pt field goal attempts (136), total field goal attempts (246) and total points (320) while ranking second in points per game (20.0).

Tom Brown was hired on April 16, 2014, as the 17th head coach in WT men’s basketball history.

In just two short years Brown has turned around the West Texas A&M University Basketball Program. Brown led the team to its first 20+ win season since 2010-11. The Buffs were picked to finish 5th in the LSC this past season and despite a pre-season, season ending injury to sophomore starter Carl White the team still managed to finish 2nd in the LSC with an overall record of 21-10. The 2nd place finish is the highest since the conference was split North/South. The Buffs continued to battle minor injuries throughout the year but every player that was called on would step up. Under Brown’s di-rection the team had some very strong individual performances. WT sophomore guard David Chav-lovich led the way. For his outstanding play David was named an NABC All-American, the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year and 1st Team All-LSC selection. Sophomore Jordan Evans (playing in his first season) received honorable mention All-LSC acclaim. The Buffs again were dominate in the classroom as the team GPA exceeded a 3.0 for the year.

2015-16 the Buffs set a new record in the class-room. The team recorded the highest GPA for Men’s Basketball in a season.

Coach Brown inherited a WT team that won two games in the LSC and 10 games overall in 2013-14. Brown had to start from scratch in late April, the team had three seniors and one walkon redshirt freshman. Just three student-athletes saw playing time from the previous year and the team was picked to finish last in the Lone Star Confer-ence Preseason Poll. However, under Brown West Texas A&M University finished the season 5th in the LSC and posted a 17-12 overall record. The Buffs made the LSC Tournament as the fifth seed. There were some individual accolades as well, all three of the returning seniors improved on their scoring average from the previous season. Tez Dumars surpassed Maurice Cheeks in WT All-Time scoring and finished his career ranked 4th All-Time in scoring at WT. David Chavlovich was the squads leading scorer, 2nd Team All-Conference Perform-er and the Freshman of the Year in the LSC as he averaged 16.5 points per contest to go along with 93 assists and 30 steals.

In 2014-15, the Buffs set a new record in the classroom. The team recorded the highest GPA for Men’s Basketball in a season.

Tom was the driving force as the Associate Head Coach and head recruiter in the most successful Division II men’s basketball program in recent history at Winona State University. The Warriors won the NCAA Division II National Cham-pionship in 2006 and 2008 and finished as the National Finalist in 2007. During that span, Winona State posted an unprecedented 105-6 record. WT Assistant Coach Quincy Henderson played for Coach Brown from 2005-2008. Quincy’s record as a collegiate player at WSU was 105-6.

Named Division II Bulletin’s ‘Program of the Decade’ for 2000-2009, WSU set a NCAA Division II record with 57 consecutive wins, a run that began on Jan. 13, 2006, and didn’t end until the national title game on Mar. 24, 2007. The 2007-08 Warrior squad won a NCAA record 38 games.

An excellent recruiter and teacher, Brown recruited and developed some of the best players in the nation with three National Player of the Year recipients, along with seven first team All-America honorees. 11 players total have earned All-America status including WT Sopho-more David Chavlovich. Brown has coached five NSIC Most Valuable Players, seven NSIC Defen-sive Players of the Year and two Elite Eight Most Valuable Players.

Brown is doing it again at WT as David Chav-lovich has earned both Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in the best Division II Confer-ence in the Nation, the Lone Star Conference.

Brown attended and played basketball (1988-1992) and baseball (1991) at Winona State University. He finished his Warrior career ranked fifth in program history in scoring, second in assists and first in steals. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1993 in physical education and completed his master’s degree in education in 1998.

He and his wife Dr. Trisha Brown are the proud parents of three children, TJ, Zach and Ella. Dr. Brown is currently an Instructor and works in the Sports & Exercise Science Department at West Texas A&M.

ORANGE, CA - West Texas A&M opened up their 2016-17 campaign in style as five different Buffs scored in double-figures to lead WT to an 86-72 season opening win over the Azusa Pacific Cougars to open up the CCA Division II Tipoff Classic at the Santia-go Canyon College Athletics Com-plex in Orange, California.

The Buffs went 28-of-64 (43.8%) from the floor including 10-of-24 (41.7%) from deep and 20-of-28 (71.4%) from the charity stripe to go along with 37 rebounds (nine offensive, 28 defen-sive), 13 assist, seven turnovers, two blocks and nine steals. Evans led the way for WT with 20 points followed by Chavlovich (16), Walton (14), White (13), and Quaid (12) in double-digits while Quaid ended the game with 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Azusa Pacific went 23-of-57 (40.4%) from the field including 9-of-26 (34.6% from long range and 17-of-23 (73.9%) from the free throw line to go along with 40 rebounds (10 offensive, 30 defensive), 13 assists, 20 turnovers, two blocks and four steals. Schreiber led all players with 25 points on the afternoon followed by Peterson with 14 and Kutlesic with 13.

ORANGE, CA - West Texas A&M junior guard Jordan Evans scored 20 points for the second straight contest as the Buffs shot 50 percent from the floor in an 83-70 win over St. Cloud State during the CCA Division II Tipoff Clas-sic at the Santiago Canyon College Athletics Complex in Orange, Califor-nia.

The Buffs were led offensively by Ev-ans with his second straight 20-point performance followed by White with 17 and Chavlovich with 15. Walton, Chavlovich and White grabbed six rebounds each while Chavlovich dished out five steals. WT went 29-of-58 (50%) from the floor including 11-of-25 (44%) from deep and 14-of-28 (50%) with 36 rebounds (nine offen-sive, 27 defensive), 17 assists, 13 turn-overs, two blocks and three steals. The Huskies were led by Davis with 23 points followed by Scottie Stone with 16 while Davis grabbed eight rebounds on the night. SCSU went 22-of-61 (36.1%) from the floor including 7-of-21 (33.3%) from long range and 19-of-26 (73.1%) from the free throw line to go along with 42 rebounds (15 offensive, 27 defensive), 11 assists, 16 turnovers, five blocks and five steals.

ORANGE, CA - The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M are off to their best start to a season since 2012-13 thanks to an 11-0 run in the heart of the sec-ond half as WT outlasted #23 Arkan-sas-Fort Smith, 94-86 in the finale of the CCA Division II Tipoff Classic at the Santiago Canyon College Athlet-ics Complex in Orange, California.

The Buffs were led by Walton with 24 points followed by Chavlovich (19), Evans (17) and Golightly Jr. (10) with double-digit points while Chavlovich led WT with six rebounds and three assists. WT went 33-of-65 (50.8%) from the floor including 10-of-29 (34.5%) from deep and 18-of-27 (66.7%) from the free throw line to go along with 37 rebounds (13 offensive, 24 defensive), 13 assists, 13 turnovers, five blocks and three steals.
