Isha chooses wrestling over wedding

Finally, career took prece-dence. The new show, titled 100% De Dhana Dhan is a real-ity show based on wrestling which will go on air from the last week of Au-gust. Our source re-veals, “Isha was in two minds initially about whether she should accept the offer to host the show be-cause she had planned her wedding for October. But Isha hasn’t ever hosted a show before, so that prompted her to accept the offer. She dis-cussed the matter with her boyfriend Timmy Narang and they figured it was fine to postpone the wedding.

The show will last for at least four months and Isha

wants to give her full atten-tion to the show.” 100% De Dhana Dhan will see India’s legendary wres-tler Dara Singh play men-tor to the contestants. Dara Singh says, “It is hearten-

ing to see that wrestling as a sport is being given its due

importance. Finally, a chan-nel has realised the potential of this sport and is trying to revive it. It is great to see young boys take up the sport that requires much dedica-tion and a lot of discipline.”

Marc, Chetan & Aakashh fight for foodMarc, Chetan and Akashh, the three best friends in Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao, always had a soft corner for Mona Vasu. They considered Mona one of the boys and liked her company. But all this changed on one rainy day over nothing but a meager meal...

The pouring rain would hamper the camp fire, so Marc requested for some cooked food to be sent since the lunch Anaida was cooking was not completely prepared. But all others except Marc, Chetan and Akashh took a few bites of the meal Anaida had cooked. And when the cooked food was sent, the oth-ers came running to eat it. All of them were happy to have eaten some good food but also complimented Anaida’s preparation.

When the rains stopped, Marc, Chetan and Akashh realised that the food prepared in the camp was less as others had eaten with-out their knowledge, which led to an ugly argument. Anaida defended the situation by pointing out that she had asked Marc

thrice if they don’t want the food she had prepared and that Marc didn’t bother since they were going to get cooked food. The whole issue left a bad taste in Mona’s mouth as the three men accused her of cheating them inspite of be-ing their friend. Mona was very upset as she

could not believe that her friends would question her integrity. The three men were in such a foul mood, that they refused to eat any dinner in spite of everyone requesting them to. Aakashh, Chetan and Marc now think that Mona is two-faced and have decided to boycott her; they said “Whenever we have our private talks, we will request her to move away from us.”

The reality TV bug seems to have bitten Isha Koppikar quite hard. She wrestled with the decision to host a show at the cost of post-poning her wedding.

Shahid’s next with Genelia is Chance Pe Dance?Ken Ghosh’s Shahid Kapoor starrer is getting in news each day. Earlier it was Jiah Khan’s replacement with Genelia D’Souza. Now it is the change in title of the film for the third time. The title change started from Star to Ya-hoo and now the film is apparent-ly been renamed as Chance Pe Dance. It is learnt that director Ken Ghosh wasn’t happy with the earlier titles. Being a dance-based movie, the director finds this title apt and has finalized for the same. Ken Ghosh says, “We haven’t locked any final title as yet. And nor was Yahoo or Star as the film’s title. We are still deciding

for the same. “ Has Chance Pe Dance title been final-ized? He says, “Not as yet, we will be finalizing it by end of this week. “

However, a source from UTV maintains, “The pro-mos and poster have been locked on the title of Chance Pe Dance. “

The film stars Shahid as the dancing sensation in the film. It is all about a middle class youngster who goes on to become a music sensation. The problem arises when he experi-ences a misfor-tune and gets into dejection. Ultimately, he recovers and hits the track yet again. Justin Tim-berlake’s chore-ographer Marty Kedulka and Britney Spears’ choreographer Brian Friedman have trained Sha-hid for the film. The movie is due to release in No-vember.

Amitabh’s blog gets abusive, threatens to quitAdding to Amitabh Bach-chan’s long list of worries are the people using his blog to abuse each other. The actor who is deal-ing with a back problem, daughter-in-law Aishwarya Bachchan’s flu and long-time friend, Amar Singh’s illness has lost his patience with the people using his blog to swear at each oth-er. He has written on his blog that it hurts him when peo-ple use the platform of this medium to get personal and ugly with each other. So, he has threatened that if they don’t stop, he will stop blogging. Meanwhile, writing about Aishwarya’s illness, he said that she is down with chest infection and flu-like symptoms. He finds it worrying to be far away (he is Sin-gapore right now, with Amar Singh) from his chil-dren even though they are grown-up and responsible. But to him, children will always remain children.

Anil-Spielberg JV gets $325mNEW DELHI: Anil Ambani-led ADAG Group and Hollywood director Steven Spiel-berg’s Dreamworks Studios, have completed the first phase of funding for their new Los Angeles-based motion picture company. Both entities, in a statement said, “JP Mor-gan Securities arranged the syndication of about $325 million of senior debt, which has priority in repayment over other kinds of debt.’’ Reliance Big Entertainment matched debt with its equity commitment. ‘‘The Walt Disney Studios, who will handle marketing and distribution for the studio, will also extend a loan to DreamWorks as part of the distribution deal,’’ the statement said. Last month, ADAG and Dreamworks an-nounced movie deal, with an initial funding of $825 million from the Anil Ambani group. ‘‘Our partnership with Stacey and Steven is the cornerstone of our Hollywood strategy as we grow our film interests across the globe. Now Stacey and Steven can focus on produc-ing more of the great films for which they are renowned,’’ Ambani said. ‘‘This will allow us to move ahead quickly into production with our first group of films,’’ said Stacey Snider and Steven Spielberg in a joint statement.

US on slow path to economic recovery, says BuffettNEW YORK: Legendary investor Warren

Buffett has said the American economy is out of the “emergency room” and the country appears to be on a slow path to economic recovery. Buffett, who is the chairman of diversified group Berkshire Hathaway, has noted that a gush of Fed-eral money helped in avoiding an economic melt-down. “The United States economy is now out of the emergency room and appears to be on a slow path to recovery,” Buffett wrote in a column in the New York Times. America is witnessing one of the worst financial crisis since the 1930’s Great Depression, forcing the administration to come up with various mon-etary measures including a mammoth $787 billion stimulus, to boost the economy. Buffett said that a meltdown was avoided with a gusher of Federal money playing an essential role in the rescue. “... enormous dosages of monetary medicine con-tinue to be administered and, before long, we will need to deal with their side effects,” Buffett said. The famed investor noted that such effects are in-visible now but their “threat may be as ominous as that posed by the financial crisis itself”. Noting that fiscally the country is in “unchartered territory”, Buffett pointed out that fiscal deficit would be $1.8 trillion. He said the Federal debt can be financed by bor-rowing from foreigners, US citizens and printing money.

Made-in-India Yardley to hit shelves soonCHENNAI: The 200-year-old Yardley brand — once a must-buy for those returning from an over-seas trip — will soon be made in India. Yardley is also planning to unleash a range of products like deo-sprays, perfumes, soaps, talcum powder and

after-shave lotion in India. The Dubai-based Lornamead, which acquired the Yardley brand in September 2005, sees the India’s retail segment focuses too much on its the middle class rather than the ‘exclusive customer’ market. Country head Sriram Prasad feels that the company will be able to enter the Rs 7,000-crore personal care segment successfully, due to Yardley’s exclusiveness and brand familiarity. “There is a latent demand for Yardley’s products because of the brand and people want to try it.” The $220-million personal care company is launch-ing new products including a complete new range of products for men and a new range of ‘Spa’ products aimed at the traveller. The company has invested around Rs 25 crore for re-search and development for its Indian line of products. Almost all its product offerings have been customised for the Indian consumer. “People here like stronger, more flowery scents that last longer. So we have had to customise almost all the products for the Indian market,” Prasad said. Lornamead expects to sell over 60 lakh units of soaps in 12-16 months, which Prasad said is crucial for the company to determine the localisation pattern of Yard-ley’s entry. The soaps are to be priced around Rs 35, with the aim to attract grey market customers who now pay double that price. Before Lornamead acquisition, Yardley was available in India through Bond Street Cosmetics, a licensee. “We want to buy all the licenses of Yardley worldwide and make it a global consolidated brand,” Prasad said. The company is also planning to launch another heri-tage brand, Finesse (a hair-care brand) by the end of October, after test marketing the product in Delhi. Lornamead is a privately held company that has 36 brands (like Finesse, Aqua Net, Tura — “the Dettol of Africa”, Woods of Windsor and Lypsyl) under its um-brella. It acquires major brands from different coun-tries to increase its presence.

Why Boney Kapoor considers himself LuckyHe is married to one of Indian film indus-try’s most talented and beautiful starlet Sridevi but that’s not the only reason why producer Boney Ka-poor is considering himself ‘LUCKY’ nowadays. He is a much-relieved man today, and we know the reasonOur source reveals, “Boney is literally thanking his stars that he didn’t rush to release his upcoming next starring Salman Khan, Wanted on Au-gust 7th. His action thriller, the remake of Tamil super hit Pok-kiri was scheduled to release on August 7, but then he decided to change it few weeks back to September 18th to take advantage of the Eid week. ” “Now had Wanted re-leased on August 7th, it would have had to bear the brunt of the cinema closure in

FASHION

Look hot in a hat!Unlike pop icon Justin Tim-berlake and film hottie Ash-ton Kutcher who are fighting over which of them discov-ered the trucker cap first in Hollywood, our B-town celebs have gone on to pro-mote the Fedora hat as a fashion apparel. In black, white, beige and grey, hats are mak-ing style state-ments over the place. Harri-son Ford might have brought them back into vogue, but Bol-lywood Bad-shah Shah Rukh Khan was spotted looking hotter than ‘Indiana Jones’ in a hat at a do lately; while Hrithik Roshan wore one with aplomb, too, in the Krazzy 4 song.Current heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor, also, changed a few in the title track of his film. Internationally, Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Colin Ferrell, and even actresses

like Lindsay Lohan, Ashley Simpson, Kate Hudson and Britney Spears, are known to favour hats as well.“This trend is very much in abroad and here in India, it’s picking up. In the US, I’ve

seen people wearing hats while clubbing. Even the mannequins in stores have them. I wear the hat as a fashion accessory but many men wear them to hide their balding heads,” laughed cho-reographer Marc Robinson who has quite a collection. However, just because it’s a trend not every one should attempt to wear hats, said de-signer Arjun Khanna. “I feel

it doesn’t suit Indian men though it does look good on women,” he added. But stylist Nisha Sagar warned women to first check if they can carry off hats styl-ishly before wearing them.

“If you have Indian features and an Indian figure, it may not look good on you. You need to have that slight Western, inter-national look to carry off this stylish accesso-ry. It’s your style from within that will make the

hat more stylish or else, it might be a com-plete faux pas,” she said.

Meanwhile, anybody wear-ing the Fedora and wanting to know what to team it with, should heed Arjun Khanna. He said, “Justin Timber-lake wears them on trendy trousers with a jacket to go along. It also looks good on jeans.”

Hats off to Preity Zinta, Kareena Kapoor and Sophie Choudry. Ditto to Dino Morea, Kelly Dorji, Sabyasachi, Narendra Kumar, Dino Morea and Marc Robinson.

Govinda becomes a John Abraham fan!John Abraham has found a new die-hard fan from Bollywood in Govinda. Though Govinda hasn’t worked with the hunky John yet, it is learnt that he is looking forward to working with him soon. A source reveals, “Recently, when Govinda met up with his favorite director David Dha-wan, he was surprised to hear Dhawan singing huge praises of John. Dhawan is working with John in his upcoming flick, Hook Ya Crook. David appeared very impressed with John and his spontaneity, and couldn’t stop gushing about him to Govinda. That’s when Govinda got curious about John’s work in the movie. He wanted to see for himself why Dhawan was so impressed with John. Then David called Govinda to his studio the next day and showed him a few rushes of their forthcoming film. The ac-tor was pleasantly surprised to see John’s energy on the screen and the innocence he brought to the character. He felt that John’s acting skills made Dha-wan’s humor work perfectly for the film. Since then, even Govinda can’t stop gushing about John and has expressed his desire to work with him to Dhawan. ”

CHENNAI: Veteran Rahul Dravid, on Sunday, staged a comeback into India’s 15-member One-day squad while Virender Sehwag was ruled out of next month’s tri-series in Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy in South Africa. The 36-year-old Dravid, who last played an ODI back in October 2007, was

included in the squad to bolster the batting line-up for the two tournaments, which will also see the re-turn of Sachin Tendulkar. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra was included in place of left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha in the squad, an-nounced by BCCI secre-tary N Srinivasan. There was no major sur-prises in the team which features eight batsmen, four pacers, two spinners and an all-rounder in Yusuf Pathan. Mumbai left-hander Ab-hishek Nayar was retained in the side but his Ranji team-mate Rohit Sharma was axed to accommodate

Suresh Raina, who had skipped the West Indies tour because of a thumb injury. The selection committee, headed by Krishnamachari Srikkanth met at the Chi-dambaram Stadium, on Sunday, to pick the squad for the September 8-14 tri-series in Sri Lanka and the September 22-October

5 Champions Trophy and they went by the fitness level of the players and their performance in recent past. Dravid’s return was more or less certain after the In-dian top and middle order’s poor display against short-pitch deliveries in both the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa and during the West Indies tour. Besides, Sehwag’s shoul-der injury which necessi-tated a surgery, weakened the Indian top order and the selectors felt Dravid’s vast experience would strength-en the line-up. In Sehwag’s absence, Ten-dulkar is set to open with

Dravid returns, Sehwag to miss tri-series and Champions Trophy

Gautam Gambhir, while Dravid and Raina will add beef to the top and middle order, which also include vice captain Yuvraj Singh and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Sehwag’s absence allowed Dinesh Karthik to hung on to his place as a reserve opener. In the bowling department,

Mishra staged a comeback to the ODI format after six long years to join Harbhajan Singh in the spin unit. A regular in the Test squad now, Mishra played the last of his three ODIs back in April 2003 against South Africa and was frustrated at being branded a Test spe-cialist. Squad: Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, RP Singh, Ishant Shar-ma, Amit Mishra, Dinesh Karthik, Abhishek Nayar, Ashish Nehra, Praveen Ku-mar .

Vitamins don’t increase melanomaA recent randomized trial of antioxidants for cancer prevention found that daily supplementation with nutritionally appropriate doses of vitamins C and E, beta carotene, selenium and zinc appeared to in-crease the risk of melanoma in women four-fold. In the present study, lead researcher Dr Maryam M. Asgari, M.P.H., of Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Oakland examined the association be-tween antioxidants and melanoma. The team studied 69,671 women and men who were participating in the Vitamins and Lifestyle (VITAL) study, designed to examine supplement use and can-cer risk. It showed that intake of multivi-tamins and sup-plements during the previous 10 years, including selenium and beta carotene, was not associated with melanoma risk in either women or men.

The researchers also examined the risk of mela-noma associated with long-term

use of supplemental beta carotene and selenium at doses comparable to the previous study and found no associa-tion. “Consistent with the present results, case-control studies examining serologic [blood] levels of beta carotene, vi-tamin E and selenium did not find any association with subsequent risk of melanoma,” the authors write. “Moreover, the Nurses’’ Health Study reported no asso-ciation between intake of vitamins A, C and E and mela-noma risk in 162,000 women during more than 1.6 mil-lion person-years of follow-up,” they added. The study appears in Archives of Dermatology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals

Teen says, “Grandpa, they didn’t have a whole lot of problems with all these diseases when you were young did they?”Grandpa replies, “Nope.”Teen says, “Well, what did you guys use for safe sex?”Grandpa replies, “A wedding ring.”

Late Night Party: The mother and father had just given their teenage daughter family-car privileges. On Saturday night she returned home very late from a party. The next morning her father went out to the driveway to get the newspaper and came back into the house frowning. At 11:30 AM the girl sleepily walked into the kitchen, and her father asked her, “Sweetheart, what time did you get in last night?”“Not too late, Dad.” she replied nervously.Dead-panned, her father said, “Then, my precious one, I’ll have to talk with the paperboy about putting my paper under the front tire of the car.”

Ramba on her new role! And once that happens, her eyes begin to gleam. “Man-go Dolly will be going to Mumbai soon to promote the film,” she chirps excit-edly. Yes, the actress refers to her character in her up-coming Bollywood film — Quick Gun Murugun — like an outsider. “That’s because everybody called me by that name on the sets,” she says, “So much so, that I’ve almost forgot-ten my own name.” Call it a role with a dif-ference, and that’s exactly what she thinks, too. “It se-riously is,” she states. “But would you believe me if I said that I didn’t under-stand the story the first time I heard it? Later, I asked the director (Shashank Ghosh) to give me the full script,”

she recalls, “Soon, he was

at my place with the entire Quick Gun... team.” The director, full of creative ideas and wacky themes, was so excited at seeing

his Mango Dolly in person that he goofed up a bit. “I couldn’t understand anything when he nar-rated the story,” she says, “It was all too quick to digest.” A few months later the director landed up at Rambha’s residence again and this time, he was better prepared. “He gave me the dialogues too and it had me in splits,” she says. That was the case on the sets too, where she got to meet Rajendra Prasad and the rest of the cast. “I’ve never been spoon-fed like this before,” she says, “I was even assigned a man

Friday. Quick Gun... is the kind of film that every ac-tress ought to do in her ca-reer,” she says. One of the many thrills that

she got while shooting was wearing a blonde wig. “I’ve already worn one for a fleeting shot in Kadhalar Dhinam and I knew I’d look good in it,” she says, “But the team didn’t know that! They had 20 different types of wigs for me to choose from. I had one look at all of them and chose one. And it fit perfectly!” Rambha has two char-acters in the film that are like chalk and cheese and the variety they offered was a ma-jor attraction. “One is supposed to be sexy and the other one is a normal person,” she says, not willing to disclose any more.

MOVIE TALK

Movie rreview : Kaminey Dhan Te Nan. Vishal Bhard-waj pays homage to cinema of yore and that’s reason enough to go out and grab tickets for one of the most keenly anticipated films of our times.A few monsoons ago, Farah Khan paid hom-age to the cinema of 1970s with OM SHANTI OM. Now Bhardwaj picks up characters that we have wit-nessed on the Hindi screen before, but executes it like Tarantino and Guy Ritchie do. He creates a film that’s so different from movies we’ve witnessed thus far. Let’s say, KAMINEY is bold, stark, funny and un-predictable and that’s what works in its favour. There’re two more reasons: Shahid Kapoor and of course, ‘Dhan Te Nan’. Okay, we’ve seen Shahid pitching in a sincere act in his earlier films, but KAMINEY should catapult him to superstardom. His double role in KAMINEY is exemplary. There’s another star in KAMINEY and that’s ‘Dhan Te Nan’. Your heart starts beating faster every time you hear this in the background or also when Shahid breaks into the song. The track is as big a craze as ‘Jumma Chumma’ [HUM], ‘Ek Do Teen’ [TEZAAB] and ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’ [KHAL-NAYAK] and will

contribute enormously in at-tracting viewers in hordes. Having said that, I wish to add that KAMINEY is not the usual masala film. Sure, it’s a well-made film, but there’s no spoon feeding here. One has to be atten-tive, very attentive to grasp the goings-on and also the twists in the tale. It’s not one of those lock-your-brains-at-home types, for sure. And that might not be too ap-pealing a thought for those who swear by candyfloss or meaningless ha-ha-thons. To cut it short, KAMINEY is a film with an attitude. Like it or leave it, but you’d never be able to ignore it. KAMINEY is about a pair of twin brothers, Charlie and Guddu [Shahid Kapoor]. Charlie lisps, while Guddu stammers. They are as differ-ent as chalk and cheese. And they can’t stand the sight of each other. Till one fateful rainy night, their lives cross. Charlie gets mixed up in a deathly get-rich-quick scheme, while Guddu real-izes that the love of his life, Sweety [Priyanka Chopra], has unwittingly put a price on his head. The brothers are sucked into a world of drugs, guns and money. Their lives collide head on with the lives of gangsters, rebel sol-diers, rogue politicians and crooked cops. The brothers

have to run to protect them-selves, their dreams, their love. And most importantly, realize that all they have is each other. It takes time to get used to the world Vishal Bhardwaj wants us to enter. The characters, the relation-ships, the lingo, the tone and the setting... frankly, you don’t take to KAMINEY in-stantly. But twenty minutes into the film and things start falling in place. From there-on, you’re drawn into a dif-ferent world completely. The interval point raises the bar & also the expectations. The story takes a dramatic turn at this juncture, but minutes before that, ‘Dhan Te Nan’ makes the proceedings ex-hilarating and stimulating. Right from the sequence af-ter the interval to the finale, Vishal Bhardwaj peels off layer after layer, which erupts like a volcano towards the end. The end is long drawn and with so many charac-ters in the film, it only takes time to give a culmination to each of those characters. And that gets tedious. The violent end might not find universal acceptance. Vishal Bhardwaj proves that he’s a master storyteller. On the whole, KAMINEY lives up to the hype associated with it. Kaminey is now playing @ Albion and Woodside Cinemas.
