Back in the 1970’s Silva sponsored the production of an educational filmstrip and audio program called…
It showed what happens at an orienteering event, like copying from a master map.
Taking a bearing
Maps were explained
There was a lot of promotion for the O’Ringen 5 Days in Sweden
Sture Bjork, past World Champion, still wins at WMOC
There was information on the history of compasses
and the history of Orienteering
Also there was information about Ward Pound Ridge. Here the park ranger shows the 1972 map and goes on to tell about ….
…the many park features such as
Old farm roads Old farm fields
Boulders from the glacial era Old farm stone walls
He also explained there are lots of rock features at Ward Pound Ridge
This photo was later used on a promotional poster for Silva and Orienteering
The presentation featured the era’s big names in Orienteering
Bjorn Kjellstrom
Ken Ackerman
Canada’s Lars Carlsson
Some action shots just might have been staged!
Just think: these girls would be in their 50’s now.
The early days of orienteering at Ward Pound Ridge were certainly dynamic!
…but not a ‘pyjama suit’ in sight!
The post-race socializing was very important then as now…
Say, isn’t that Dave Pruden of Buffalo?
