What’s an aircraft wire testing lab look like? Lectromec has been in business for over thirty years.

We have worked on projects from NASA, the Air Force, and many more.

Lectromec has a patent on an aircraft wire testing process, a Designated Engineering Representative on staff, and was recently awarded the coveted ISO/IEC 17025:2005

If you haven’t had a chance to tour our lab, we present a quick eight slide tour of the lab.

1. Humidity ChamberYou may not realize that aircraft wires are expected to last from twenty to thirty years!

We never know what kinds of conditions aircraft wires will be expected to preform.

This is a humidity chamber with an eight cubic foot capacity. IT can give a humidity range from 10% to 98% and go as high as 150 degrees Centigrade.

2. High VoltageAerospace designs change all the time. Some newer systems require higher voltages than previous models. What happens to wires and connectors with higher voltages? Here is our

It has a range of 0 to 15,000 VAC

This unit can test to most UL, CSA, VDE, IEC, MIL for dielectric withstand testing

3. Scientific OvenThis is a mechanical convection oven.

The capacity is 1.4 cubic feet

It has a range of +30° to 325° Centigrade (the equivalent of 617 degrees Fahrenheit!)

The scientific oven is used to certify requirements for many kinds of aircraft wire insulation – like polyimides.

4. FreezerNot only does aerospace wire have to withstand heat, but cold as well. Here is our -85 C freezer.

Aircraft wire must be able to operate under extreme cold.

Also, the aircraft wire must be able to take quick transitions of temperature, called thermal shock

Finally, these wires must still be able to sustain minor bends – called cold bend capability.

5. Series Force TesterIt can apply up to 225 pound of force

This unit is used for testing elongation, dynamic cut-though, and compression of aerospace wires.

This is typical test for new components, and it frequently can have ten trials for each wire.

6. Scrape AbrasionWire can be subjected to abrasion from poor design, upgrades, or inadvertent damage during a routine maintenance inspection

Over the years, Lectromec has manufactured a wide range of devices to determine scape abrasion.

This gives mechanical wear resistance for wire and cable

7. Arc ResistanceAerospace wires can get damaged and arcing can occur. In order to insure that collateral damage is limited, this is our

This unit was custom manufactured by Lectromec to comply with the FAA test standards.

Most modern aerospace wires require this test.

This equipment is used to comply with specifications from SAE, MIL Spec, EN, EASE, and most modern aircraft.

8. Custom test gearWe’d love to do your aerospace wire testing, however we can also provide custom manufactured testing units for you to do your own testing

This is a picture of a wet dry arc testing device.

It can be used for components as well as EWIS systems testing. We have manufactured equipment for the U.S. Navy and other organizations domestically and abroad.

That’s what an aircraft wire testing lab looks like! Thanks for taking a “virtual” tour of our aircraft wire testing laboratory.

If you are ever in the Washington, D.C. area we’d love to give you a personal tour of all the devices we use.

Please contact Lectromec if you would like information on aircraft wire testing, EWIS evaluation services, or service life extension programs for aircraft.
