1. Forgetting the niceties of good manners: Ok so some of us are doing more to get to the
top, only reinforces the need to treat others how you would like to be treated yourself.
There’s an old saying: “be nice to the people on your way up, because you’ll also be seeing
them on your way down.”
2. Social Media Madness: Not everything you think, do and eat needs to go on Facebook or
be ###’d on Twitter. Having a short moment to think about a pic or thought that just rocked
your world but might poison someone else’s, because once it’s out there, it’s out there
forever.
3. Start relying on past successes and leave your future success to chance and reputation.
4. Forget your strengths and stress over your weaknesses: Remind yourself of the
reason you’re already moving up, you’re strong points, list them if you have to. As for
your weaknesses, that’s what your team’s for.
5. I have a circle of friends and acquaintances, no need for anymore: A continued focus on
networking in business and social situations is essential for keeping abreast of the latest
ideas in the market and making new contacts. The golf course is still the number 1 place.
6. Let your golf game go: Golfers on average, get paid more and have more time to spend
with the boss and important clients. It takes a good 4 hours to play 18 rounds and playing
well keeps you up with the important ‘players’.
7. Dress like you don’t care: Dressing down, Harry Casual, Nigel No Shave or trim will have
your seniors looking to someone else for important clients. Caring for your appearance, is a
demonstration of care and attention to detail.
