  • 1. HOW TO MAKE A HEAVYBALLOON

2. We all know that balloons, wheninflated with helium, floatbecause helium is lighter thanair. But have you ever thoughtabout blowing up a heavy balloonthat will be heavier than air? When you fill a balloon withcarbon dioxide, you can do justthat. INTRODUCTION 3. Vinegar and baking soda combine tomake carbon dioxide. Vinegar is aliquid made up of acetic acid andwater. Baking soda is a white powderysubstance and a chemical salt alsoknown as a base. When a base (bakingsoda) and an acid (vinegar) react, itcreates carbon dioxide.BACKGROUND 4. We think that the balloon wefilled with carbon dioxide willbe heavier than the balloon wefilled with air. When bothballoons are dropped from aheight of about six feet, thecarbon dioxide balloon willdrop faster because of itsweight.HYPOTHESIS 5. MATERIALSThis experiment requires basicmaterials. We need a one smallfunnel, two balloons, one empty20 ounce bottle, vinegar, andbaking soda. You can find allthese items at your local supermarket. 6. PROCEDURESThe first step to this experiment isto put three tsp. of baking soda in anempty 20 oz. bottle, then using afunnel, fill a balloon with vinegar till itis nearly full. Next stretch theopening of the balloon over thebottles opening, then let the vinegarescape into the bottle. When theballoon starts to expand take it offand tie it. Blow up another balloon thesame size using your air then drop thetwo balloons from the same height. 7. Baking soda and vinegar react, creating a chemical reactionwhich can expand and overflow. To be safe you should wearsafety goggles and put newspaperdown at your work space, becausethis experiment can be messy.SAFETY 8. OBSERVATION As we did our experiment we noticedthat when the vinegar started to mixwith the baking soda, the sound itmade sounded like fizz. It alsolooked liked a sprite juice. Theballoon filled up fast, but only to asmall size. It smelt like vinegar. When we dropped the two balloonsthe CO2 filled balloon would alwaysbe the first one to hit the ground. Iteven felt heavy too! 9. EXPLANATIONThe reason why this balloon is heavieris because the baking soda and vinegarreact to form carbon dioxide gas, which will fill the balloon. Carbondioxide weighs three times more thanair so the CO2-filled balloon will fallmuch faster that the air-filled balloon. The chemical equation for thisexperiment isHC2HO2+NaHCO3 NaC2H3O2+H2O+CO2vinegar baking soda sodium acetate water carbon dioxide 10. CONCLUSIONIn conclusion, we hope youlearned something new aboutwhat happens when baking sodaand vinegar is combined to formcarbon dioxide. This experimentis very easy and we encouragethat you try this too. Thank you!
