How ESMRA Began

I, Tony Murray, was at my wits end. I couldn't get people to respond to phone calls or emails. My verbal partner decided to drop out of the process. And, all of the work that was supposed to have been completed in the off-season was incomplete. Time had run out on the idea of a SMUSA race season.

Upon having a conversation in the first week of June 2006, everything seemed to change. I had heard from riders in regards to making something happen so that they would have another place to ride. I felt compelled to do something but, I didn't know exactly what could be done. Sonja Lifsey, Jason Hartman of Teknikos Racing, and myself decided that it was time to give the riders something they could build. We figured that if they helped build the series, then it would definitely be something that would keep their interests in mind. A series that they would help expand through the spirit of competition, while reaching out to others who may have never experienced the sport of supermoto. Thus, the beginning of Eastern SuperMoto Racing Association (ESMRA).

It was now a race against the clock. Could we do what needed to be done in time to assume the race dates that SMUSA had set with different tracks and organizations? This became an around the clock effort by all three of us to get this done. Jason instantly became the webmaster, as well as a sponsor for the organization. Sonja, ESMRA COO, and Jason worked tirelessly on getting everything formatted correctly for the website. I worked every day or every night to help finance the project. Once my work day was done, I would help Sonja and Jason. Truly a 24 hour per day effort given by three people who wanted to make something happen for the sport of supermoto. Glad we did it!Eastern SuperMoto Racing Association, established June 22, 2006.

Supermoto Racing

Supermoto racing is a rapidly expanding niche sport that combines all the best forms of motorcycle racing together into one unified market. The meshing of these two mediums is a natural cohesion. What exactly is this form of racing called supermotard or supermoto? Well, briefly, it’s about 70% pavement…30% dirt…with a jump in the middle. Staged on the grid... Sitting atop a specialized dirt bike that sports an oversized front disk brake and hand-cut road racing “slicks”... Well, you’ve got yourself someone who’s prepared to ride in excess of 100 M.P.H. on the paved straights, slide through corners, and tear it up in the dirt...

The sport emerged in the United States in the late 70’s through the mid 80’s with the popularity of the ABC Wide World of Sports television series “Superbikers”. This series matched top riders from road racing, drag racing, flat track, and motocross against each other in order to answer the bigger question of who was the best of the best. The U.S. series may have faded into history but the French adopted the sport and have elevated it to new levels (Supermotard is the French translation derived from the word Superbiker). The sport has developed a huge European following as evidenced by the debut of an FIM sanctioned World Championship in 2002.

Supermoto racing is a relatively inexpensive way to experience the precise handling and control of road racing and the raw acceleration and braking of dirt bike racing. It’s a sport that’s showing resurgence here in the United States with a growing legion of advocates, from participant to spectator. As a matter of fact, the sport of supermoto in the U.S. has grown to the point where it has become a featured event in the Summer X-Games.

Organized

ESMRA focuses on being organized on and off the track, with rider safety as a priority but, also having everything going to plan. ESMRA offers a personal website for riders to receive all racing information from “how to”, rules, classes, and race day schedules, even before the riders leave there homes. They also offer riders online sign up, contingency waivers, race results, updated photos, rider benefits for lodging (before and after events), links to sponsor sites, as well as, various ways to contact them. ESMRA is at a level of there own and are proud of what they do.
