Bike To Breathe: a pilot to produce calm through the use of already held habits
the philosophy
to increase calm in a Stanford undergraduate’s day, simply refocus their thoughts while biking…
focus on destination
focus on breath
designsix days
one bike ride each day
inhale after a self-selected number of pedals
exhale after that same number of pedals
repeat until destination is reached
design (cont.)one reminder text sent per day
“Bike to Breathe! What is one thing you enjoy about the breathing exercises? In five words or less, text back what you
think so far! Enjoy the day!”
one text-back asked for per day“This is more than 5 words, but for just a few seconds my mind
is entirely clear!”
a feedback survey after the pilot ends

the day three experiment
I did not ask for any text back confirmations.“Bike to breathe. Really pay to the simple act of riding a bike.” 6:41 PM
But, I still received responses:
Did it!
I took 20 breaths today.
I hypothesize that this is due to habit building itself.

Day 3 Experiment Large response asked for
lessons
Every single response elicited a positive reaction.
Do not teach something new. Simply refocus acts that people do naturally.
Text back design is the key to interaction.
