Basketball Ontario Variations
from
FIBA 2014 - Rule set
The Fundamentals
Basketball Ontario has various classifications •Learn to Train:
U10 (Novice); U11 (Atom); U12 (Major Atom) •Train to Learn:
U13 (Bantam); U14 (Major Bantam) •Train to Compete:
U15 (Midget); U16 (Major Midget);• U17 (Juvenile); U19 (Junior)
Some variations to FIBA are common to all ages and some are unique to each age class
Notable Variations Common to All Levels
1. 32 minute game vs 40 min game (8 x 4 minute shifts or 4 x 8 minute periods)
2. Extra time is 4 minutes vs 5 minutes3. No-charge semi circle is not in use 4. Restricted Area (order if more than
one) New FIBA rectangle Old FIBA trapezoid NFHS (one spot up)

5. 24-second reset on offensive rebound vs 14- second reset6. May add player to score sheet
after game start 7. Captain as coach only if 19

Unique Variations per Age Class
Under 10 1. No shot clock (Modified Closely Guarded) 2. 8 x 4 minute shifts - each shift begins with
AP arrow at centre 3. Penalty (5 fouls per 2 shifts) 4. No 3-point line in use 5. 13-foot free throw line 6. No substitution during a shift unless for
injury or player disqualification or fouling out7. No pressing at any time (Drop back Rule)8. Required to play Person to person defence 9. Equal Participation

Under 11 – Under 12 1. No shot clock (Modified Closely Guarded) 2. 8 x 4 minute shifts - each shift begins with

Modified Closely Guarded
Applicable only when shot clock not in use
FIBA closely guarded rule is in effect all game• Holding the ball anywhere on the court • Within 1 meter • Playing active defence
The Modification:
If the officials deem that the offence is withholding the ball: • Count applies to holding and/or dribbling
Drop back Rule
•Enforced by officials • At U10 – when a team gains/has control of the
ball in their backcourt the other team must retreat to its backcourt
• At U11-U15 – when a team is winning by 15 points or more, it must retreat to its backcourt when the losing team gains/has control of the ball in their backcourt
• Defense must allow offence to dribble ball unimpeded across centre line • Penalized by throw-in at free throw line extended in
frontcourt • Repeated violation may result in warning for delay and
subsequent technical foul charged against the team
Equal Participation
•Officials to help administer - Line up in front of scorers table - Scorer records those entering
•Not in effect for extra time (substitution restrictions still in effect)
•Problems are to be dealt with by the tournament convenor
Person to Person Defence
• Not enforced by officials • Problems are to be dealt with by
the tournament convenor
