Understanding the Gem Pyramid…

Before we get to identifying Jyotish Gemstones, let’s take a look at the “Gem Pyramid” and understand the various varieties that are available…

We get the gem ore during mining from which we get what is called non-gem grade material. From this selection of appropriate “roughs” are done and sent for processing. Once the cutting & polishing are done, based on the quality of the ‘source gem rough” and the finished product, they are categorized into Lowest grade, Middle Grade, High Grade and Top Grade.

Lowest grade: primarily used in cheap jewelleryMiddle grade: used in fashion jewelleryHigh grade: primarily used in traditional jewellery; some times used for jyotish purpose, depending on qualityTop grade: Jyotish Quality; used for astrological purposes

Only gemstones that are free of any defects (as mentioned in the sacred texts), un-treated and natural are suitable for Jyotish purposes !!!http://www.gemstoneuniverse.com/jyotishgemstones.php

What is meant by Jyotish?

To understand what Jyotish Gemstones are, we must first understand the meaning of Jyotish. Jyotish is usually understood as Astrology, which is partially true, but the word JYOTISH is derived from two words, JYOT meaning light and ISH, meaning God, together meaning light of God. Jyotish is the science of light.

We know that everything in this universe is composed of cosmic rays, which are visible through a prism as the 7 basic colour or VIBGYOR. Gem therapy uses these cosmic rays, which represent different planetary energies to get positive results and to derive maximum benefits.

Quote from a sacred text regarding Jyotish Gemstones• “Inward glowing lustre, transparency, illumination

with rays, sparkle, free from impurities and good formation of the shape are the characteristics of good gems” -(Agni Purana, 246.13-14).

The science of Gem Therapy uses the influence of light on the body and mind.A good natural Gemstone will make a profound impact on your organ system, especially the endocrine system and the central nervous system.

What is a Jyotish Gemstone?

To put it in simple terms, Jyotish Gemstones are Gemstones of a particular quality that are used for achieving desired results, based on the sacred principles of Astrology.

A Gemstone qualifies as a Jyotish Gem only when it excels on all 4C’s-the CUT, COLOUR, CLARITY and CARAT weight.

On top of the lustre and colour only a natural & untreated gem qualifies to be a Jyotish Gemstone and has the capacity to bring about promised results.

Due to the rarity of natural gems today, a lot of new techniques are being developed each day to enhance the beauty of gems that are flawed, which are the accepted norm for jewelry purposes, but renders the gem useless for Jyotish purpose.

“Treatments” of any kind to the gem to enhance the beauty takes away its Sattvik (pure) nature and renders it unfit for Jyotish purposes.

When accurate recommendations are implemented by using natural, un-treated, flawless Jyotish quality gemstones, you can be sure of good results !!!

Basic Characteristics of a Jyotish Gemstone

To get the best out of Gem Therapy, the following five basic criteria have to be kept in mind:1) NATURALAny Gemstone used for Jyotish purpose must be 100% natural, treatment-free. Any treatment done to enhance the beauty, colour or clarity render the gem unsuitable for Jyotish purpose

2) COLOURGems come in various colours depending on their origin; but the purity of the original colour with only the slightest of hues of other colours are the best gems!

3) CLARITYClarity is very important for the cosmic rays to pass thru the gemstone and work on our body system. Having said that, fine inclusions / feathers are “natures fingerprint” to prove that they are natural and not manufactured in labs. However any crystal gemstone with less than 85% of clarity is not a Jyotish Gemstone

It is extremely important for the gemstones to be NATURAL with pure COLOUR and high level of CLARITY for them to be of Jyotish quality

Basic Characteristics of a Jyotish Gemstone

4) CUTIt is important for a Jyotish Gemstone to have precision cuts, to make sure that it allows for the maximum play of light and absorption of cosmic rays into the body system. The shape of the gem is not as important as the precision cut of the gem.

5) CARAT (weight)While it is important to have gemstones of adequate weight (2-4 carats usually), most of the times people are recommended gems of higher carat to peddle low-grade or non-grade gems.

PS: Be wary of people who state that one needs to use 1 carat for every 10Kgs of body weight!!! That means for a person of 70 Kgs, he or she will have to use a 7 carat diamond or ruby to benefit from gem therapy. Isn’t that ridiculous???

Natural, un-treated, flawless gemstones that have fulfilled the criteria of Colour, Clarity & Cut even if they are of 1-2 carats work wonders !!!
