Introduction: Our culture is interested in self help

and yet they are looking in all of the wrong places (Websites, magazines, books).

Self help books abound and yet the Bible was written by God to serve that very purpose 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:3

We want to do an examination of the book of God to find ways to better ourselves as we follow His instructions.

Self-ImageSelf-Image Revealed in God’s book

God tells us about our image from the very beginning of creation. Gen. 1:26-27; 2 Cor. 3:12-18; 4:3-6

We are to be conformed into the image of Christ because that is our Creator’s purpose for us. Romans 8:28-39

Since Jesus is the image of God, we must follow Him. Col. 1:13-16, 21-23

Self-ImageSelf-ImageSelf - Renovation

We need to remove our old self & allow a new self to take its place.

Rom. 6:3-11; 2 Cor. 5:16-17; Eph. 4:22-27

We change our self from the old to the new because we are to be like our Creator. Col. 3:1-15

Once we realize the new life that God has called us to we will have a renewed self-image. Eph. 4:24

Application:

If you need help with your self image do not look in a mirror and change physical things.

Look to the word of God and see if you are living a new life as a new creature according to the image of God.

May we all use the book of God each day for help to better our self- image and live holy lives before God.

Help Yourself to Obey the Help Yourself to Obey the Gospel of Christ!Gospel of Christ!

One must realize they have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. Romans 3:23

Therefore one is in need of salvation from sin. Acts 16:30

Jesus plan of salvation tells of his death, burial, and resurrection 1 Cor. 15:3-4, and requires…– That we hear and believe the Gospel.

Romans 1:16– That we repent of our sins. Luke 13:3– That we confess Jesus. Acts 8:37– That we be baptized into Christ.

Romans 6:3-6– That we be faithful to Jesus, and keep His

commands. Revelation 2:10; John 14:6

Self-LessSelf-Less and the Book of God

Instead of being selfless many are selfish and unwilling to think of others.

The very essence of the Christian life, is denying ourselves to live a life of service to the Lord and others. Matthew 16:24

We need to be humble and focus less on ourselves and more on being a servant Matthew 18:3-4; 23:12; Romans 12:3; 15:2-3

Self-LessSelf-Less and the Book of God

Jesus is our example of true selflessness and service to others. Phil. 2:3-13

We are to put away selfish attitudes and actions that hinder our service to God and others Jam. 3:13-18; Gal. 6:2-5

We have no room to boast in ourselves but rather in the Lord, because we are no better than others in the Lord

2 Cor. 10:17-18; 1 Cor. 12:15-16, 23

Some people are so focused on self that they do not focus on the right things in life Luke 12:16-21

In some cases people will even exalt themselves to the position of God 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4

We need to look not on our own interests but to the good of others 1 Corinthians 10:23-24

Application: If you need help with being selfless

do not turn to the words of man, but to the example and words of the Son of man.

Don’t be selfish and neglect the service of others but find ways to put the Lord first in your life…and others also

May we all use the book of God each day for help in making us to be self-less, living humble lives before God.

Come to Jesus, Be Saved! Jesus was humble and selfless. Phil. 2:8

We need to be humble, selfless, and obedient. Heb. 5:9; Luke 9:23

Jesus plan for salvation requires we: Hear and believe the gospel. Rom. 1:16

Repent of sinful living. Acts 2:38

Confess Jesus. Acts 8:37; Rom.10:9-10

Be baptized into Christ. Galatians 3:27; Acts 22:16

Be faithful to Jesus, keeping His commandments. Mt. 28:20; Rev. 2:10

Self-ExamSelf-Exam Our Responsibility

Whether or not we want to do a self-exam or not, God examines and knows our hearts Jer. 12:3a; 1 Jn. 3:18-21

We would do well to make sure we are living right before God in faithful service. 2 Corinthians 13:5

We cannot examine ourselves by our own standard, but as the Lord would see us 1 Corinthians 4:3-6

Everyone is to examine his deeds before God and check himself by the truth Gal. 6:4; Jn. 8:31-34

We are even told to look within the heart during the assembly of the saints 1 Corinthians 11:27-29

We want to avoid evil while doing good and this requires a self-exam 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22

We need to look to examples of old and see how we need to examine ourselves Lamentations 3:38-40; Hag. 1:5-7

Consider the psalmists words of pleading with the Lord for a true examination Ps. 26:1-7; 139:23-24

May we be like the one who after the test will make some changes Ps. 119:57-60

If you need help with a self-exam, look at God’s word and measure your life against that truth!

Take the test and examine yourself to see if you are in the faith while making necessary changes to your life.

Self-ControlSelf-Control Necessity because…

The very essence of Christianityrequires it! Galatians 5:22-26

We will not be obedient to the gospel unless we have self-control and we are to be in subjection to it. See Acts 24:25

We need to realize that we must exercise self-control in everything! 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

There are many examples of when and how to practice self-control

1 Cor. 7:5, 9; Acts 5:4; Ex. 32:21-25 If we are becoming stronger in the

faith we will add self control to our lives. 2 Peter 1:5-11; See Titus 1:8

We need to let the love of Christ be the controlling agent in our lives!2 Corinthians 5:14; 10:5

If you need help with self-control let the love of Christ guide and control you to do the will of God.

Consider that self-control is a sign of spiritual growth, so check to see if you have added this virtue.
