ਗਿਰਸਤ ਮਗਿ ਗ ਿੰ ਤ ਉਦਾਸ ਅਿਿੰਕਾਰ ॥ In the householder's life, there is anxiety, and in the life of the renunciate, there is egotism.

ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤ ਜੀਅ ਕਉ ਜਿੰਜਾਰ ॥੩॥ Performing religious rituals, the individual is entangled. ||3||

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗਕਰਪ੍ਾ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਵਗਸ ਆਇਆ ॥ By God's Grace, the mind is brought under control;

ਨਾਨਕ ਿੁਰਮੁਗਿ ਤਰੀ ਗਤਗਨ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥ O Nanak, the Gurmukh crosses over the ocean of Maya. ||4||

ਥਥਾ ਗਥਰੁ ਕੋਊ ਨਿੀ ਕਾਇ ਪ੍ਸਾਰਿ ੁਪ੍ਾਵ ॥

T'HAT'HA: Nothing is permanent - why do you stretch out your feet?

ਅਗਨਕ ਬਿੰ ਬਲ ਛਲ ਕਰਿੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਏਕ ਉਪ੍ਾਵ ॥ You commit so many fraudulent and deceitful actions as you chase after Maya.

ਥੈਲੀ ਸਿੰ ਿੁ ਸਰਮੁ ਕਰਿੁ ਥਾਗਕ ਪ੍ਰਿੁ ਿਾਵਾਰ ॥ You work to fill up your bag, you fool, and then you fall down exhausted.

ਮਨ ਕੈ ਕਾਗਮ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਅਿੰ ਤੇ ਅਉਸਰ ਬਾਰ ॥ But this shall be of no use to you at all at that very last instant.

ਗਥਗਤ ਪ੍ਾਵਿੁ ਿੋਗਬਦ ਭਜਿੁ ਸਿੰ ਤਿ ਕੀ ਗਸਿ ਲੇਿੁ ॥ You shall find stability only by vibrating upon the Lord of the Universe, and accepting the Teachings

of the Saints.

ਪ੍ਰੀਗਤ ਕਰਿੁ ਸਦ ਏਕ ਗਸਉ ਇਆ ਸਾ ਾ ਅਸਨੇਿੁ ॥ Embrace love for the One Lord forever - this is true love!

ਗਤਰਿੁ ਿੁਣਾ ਗਵਗ ਸਿਜੁ ਨ ਪ੍ਾਈਐ ਤਰੈ ਿੁਣ ਭਰਗਮ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥ In the three qualities, intuitive balance is not obtained; the three qualities lead to delusion and doubt.

ਪ੍ੜੀਐ ਿੁਣੀਐ ਗਕਆ ਕਥੀਐ ਜਾ ਮੁਿੰ ਢਿੁ ਘੁਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ What is the point of reading, studying and debating, if one loses his roots?

ਉਥੇ ਪ੍ਦ ਮਗਿ ਸਿਜੁ ਿੈ ਿੁਰਮੁਗਿ ਪ੍ਲੈ ਪ੍ਾਇ ॥੬॥ In the fourth state, there is intuitive balance; the Gurmukhs gather it in.

ਕਾਮੁ ਨ ਗਬਸਗਰਓ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਨ ਗਬਸਗਰਓ ਲੋਭੁ ਨ ਛੂਗਿਓ ਦੇਵਾ ॥ You have not forgotten sexual desire, and you have not forgotten anger; greed has not left you either.

ਪ੍ਰ ਗਨਿੰ ਦਾ ਮੁਿ ਤੇ ਨਿੀ ਛੂਿੀ ਗਨਫਲ ਭਈ ਸਭ ਸੇਵਾ ॥੧॥ Your mouth has not stopped slandering and gossiping about others. Your service is useless and fruitless. ||1||

ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਗਨਿੰ ਦਗਸ ਕਾਇ ਭੂਲੀ ਿਵਾਰੀ ॥ Why do you slander the Lord? You are ignorant and deluded.

ਦੁਗਕਰਤੁ ਸੁਗਕਰਤੁ ਥਾਰੋ ਕਰਮੁ ਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਿਾਉ ॥ Pain and pleasure are the result of your own actions. ||1||Pause||

ਪ੍ਰ ਧਨ ਪ੍ਰ ਤਨ ਪ੍ਰ ਤੀ ਗਨਿੰ ਦਾ ਅਿਾਗਧ ਿਾਗਿ ਿਰਕਾਇਆ ॥ Others' wealth, others' wives and the slander of others - eating the uneatable, you have gone crazy.

ਸਾ ਧਰਮ ਗਸਉ ਰੁਗ ਨਿੀ ਆਵੈ ਸਗਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਛੋਿਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ You have not enshrined love for the True Faith of Dharma; hearing the Truth, you are enraged. ||3||

ਕਾਿੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਿਵਾਵਿੁ ਵੈਗਰ ਵਾਗਦ ॥੨॥ Why waste your life in hatred, vengeance and conflict? ||2||

ਰੁਦਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਕੀ ਮਾਇ ॥ Naam Dayv's mother began to cry,

ਛੋਗਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਕੀ ਨ ਭਜਗਿ ਿਦੁਾਇ ॥੬॥ and she said, "Why don't you abandon your Lord Raam, and worship his Lord Allah?"||6||

ਨ ਿਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਪ੍ੂਿੰ ਿੜਾ ਨ ਤੂ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥ Naam Dayv answered, "I am not your son, and you are not my mother.

ਗਪ੍ਿੰ ਿੁ ਪ੍ੜ ੈਤਉ ਿਗਰ ਿੁਨ ਿਾਇ ॥੭॥ Even if my body dies, I will still sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord."||7|

Ego leads to hypocrisy and distance from God.

ਕੋਗਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਿਉ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

If someone does millions of good deeds, while acting in ego,

ਸਰਮੁ ਪ੍ਾਵੈ ਸਿਲੇ ਗਬਰਥਾਰੇ ॥

he shall incur only trouble; all this is in vain

ਗਬਨੁ ਿਗਰ ਭਜਨ ਸਿਲ ਦੁਿ ਪ੍ਾਵਤ ਗਜਉ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਢਾਇ ਸੂਤ ਕੇ ਿਿੂਆ ॥

Without devotional worship of the Lord, they all suffer in pain, caught in the tangled web of their love.

ਪ੍ਾਿਿੰ ਗਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ੂਕਈ ਭਾਈ ਅਿੰਤਗਰ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਵਕਾਰੀ ॥ Filth cannot be washed away by hypocrisy, O Siblings of Destiny; the filth of corruption and sin is within you.

ਇਨ ਗਬਗਧ ਿੂਬੀ ਮਾਕੁਰੀ ਭਾਈ ਊਂਿੀ ਗਸਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਰੀ ॥੨॥ This is how the spider is destroyed, O Siblings of Destiny, by falling head-long in its own web. ||2||

ਿੁਰਗਸਿ ਮੀਤ ਲਿੁ ਿੁਰ ਾਲੀ ॥ O Sikhs of the Guru, O friends, walk on the Guru's Path.

ਜੋ ਿੁਰੁ ਕਿੈ ਸੋਈ ਭਲ ਮਾਨਿੁ ਿਗਰ ਿਗਰ ਕਥਾ ਗਨਰਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਿਾਉ ॥

Whatever the Guru says, accept that as good; the sermon of the Lord, Har, Har, is unique and wonderful. ||1||Pause||

ਗਲਵ ਧਾਤ ੁਦੁਇ ਰਾਿ ਿੈ ਿੁਕਮੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

Loving attention to the Lord and attachment to Maya are the two separate ways; all act according to the Hukam of the Lord's Command

ਉਦਮੁ ਕੀਆ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਆਰਿੰ ਭੁ ਰ ਾਇਆ ॥ I made the effort; I did it, and made a beginning.

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੇ੍ ਜਗਪ੍ ਜੀਵਣਾ ਿੁਗਰ ਮਿੰ ਤੁ ਗਦਰੜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ I live by chanting and meditating on the Naam. The Guru has implanted this Mantra within me. ||1||

ਿੁਰ ਮਿੰ ਤਰ ਿੀਣਸ੍੍ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗਧਰਿਿੰ ਤ ਜਨਮ ਭਰਸਿਣਿ ॥ That mortal who lacks the Guru's Mantra - cursed and contaminated is his life.

ਕੂਕਰਿ ਸੂਕਰਿ ਿਰਧਭਿ ਕਾਕਿ ਸਰਪ੍ਨਿ ਤੁਗਲ ਿਲਿ ॥੩੩॥ That blockhead is just a dog, a pig, a jackass, a crow, a snake. ||33||
