A examination of the Motivation for Bible Study in Bible School
The Bible schools began in 1780 in England.Several schools were found in the states in
1790.Children began working on the weekdays
and left to “whatever” on the weekends.
Sunday schools provided an alternative to Sunday rowdiness. The schools would also teach proper behavior, enforcing cleanliness, providing Sunday clothing, and reprimanding children for lying, swearing, talking in an indecent manner, or other misbehavior.
First Day Society Rules, in Board of Visitors Minutes, February 1, 1791, Presbyterian
Historical Society.
Bible study keeps us learning.
Bible study opens doors for further discussion.
INSIDE: Bible Study brings us closer together.
OUTSIDE: Bible Study brings us closer together.
The role of the family in the learning process:
Deuteronomy 6.6-9
There were no formal schools. (Deuteronomy 11.19; 32.46)
The role of the family in the learning process:
Grandparents were also part of the process. (Deuteronomy 4.9)
Proverbs 9.10
Note the process of teaching opportunities (Joshua 4.21)
New Testament Times
The synagogue became a very vital part of the Jewish community (John 9:22).
Each Sabbath, the Jews gathered to hear the word of God read.
New Testament Times
Children had several key passages to memorize: (Deuteronomy 6:4-5; 11:13-21; Numbers 15:37-41; Psalms 113-118; Genesis 1-5; Leviticus 1-8).
(Luke 2:52).
God has always wanted the parents to be the main teachers of His word (Deuteronomy 6:6-9).
(Ephesians 6:4).
(2 Timothy 1:5).
Why is it that we can send our kids to school prepared and with pen and paper, but we send them to Bible Study unprepared, and many times without a Bible?
Is Sunday morning the only time a Bible is opened?
(Psalms 78:1-8).
Are you willing to spend time in God’s Word? Is reading enough?
Are you willing to teach you children about the Bible?Your grandchildren?
Are you willing to come to a knowledge of the truth and act upon your findings?
