Baptisms Found In
The Bible!
Eph 4:5 One Lord, one
faith, one baptism
Ephesians 4:4-6The Seven Ones of Eph. 4
▪ Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one
Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of
your calling;
▪ Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one
baptism,
▪ Eph 4:6 One God and Father of all, who
is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Today we will be working to understand
the different kinds of baptisms found in
the Bible! ▪ It is commonly stated that there are seven baptisms
found in the Bible.
▸ Moses
▸ John the Baptist
▸ Jesus (His baptism)
▸ Holy Spirit
▸ Fire
▸ Suffering
▸ Great Commission
▪ With John’s baptism being the one Jesus received and
Holy Spirit and fire being given together, some claim there
are as few as five.
Which one is needed today?
It is clear that baptism is needed for salvation,
but which one?▪ Mk 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be
saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
▪ Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be
baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ
for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift
of the Holy Ghost.
▪ 1Pe 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism
doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth
of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience
toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
We will notice the purpose of each
of these baptisms and which one
we must obey today!▪ Baptism = Greek word bap-tiz-mah (Noun)
▪ Baptize = Greek word bap-tid-zo (Verb)
▸ Each of these comes from the root word
bap-to = to dip in water (Act. 8:38; Rom.
6:3-4)
▸ Strong’s Greek Dictionary = to immerse,
submerge; to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet);
used only (in the New Testament)
I. The Baptism of Moses!▪ 1Co 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that
ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers
were under the cloud, and all passed through
the sea;
▪ 1Co 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses
in the cloud and in the sea;
▪ 1Co 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual
meat;
▪ 1Co 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual
drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that
followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
Where were they before they
crossed through the sea?
▪ They were in captivity, until they passed through
the water!
▸Were they safe before or after?
▸ Keeping in mind that the things in the OT are
for our learning and that they were shadows of
things to come! (Rom. 15:4; Heb. 8:5)
▪ Even after they were saved through the water,
was this the end with them? No! This was their
new beginning and they now needed to follow the
cloud which was Jesus! (1 Cor. 10:5-12 cf. Rom.
6:3-4)
II. The Baptism of John the Baptist!Matt. 3:1-17; Luke 3:2-22)
▪ John was the “voice of one crying in the
wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make
his paths straight” (Lk. 3:4)
▪ His message was “repent ye, for kingdom of God
is at hand” (Mt. 3:2)
▸ The kingdom coming was near by, it was within
arms reach!
▸ In Acts 2 the kingdom comes as promised!
(Mt. 16; Act. 2 cf. Is. 2; Dan. 2; Joel 2)
▸ After Acts 2 we read of those “in” the kingdom!
(Col. 1:13; 1 Thess. 2:12; Rev. 1:5)
John’s baptism is no longer needed
today because the kingdom has come!▪ Ac 18:24 And a certain Jew named Apollos,
born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty
in the scriptures, came to Ephesus.
▪ Ac 18:25 This man was instructed in the way of
the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake
and taught diligently the things of the Lord,
knowing only the baptism of John.
▪ Ac 18:26 And he began to speak boldly in the
synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had
heard, they took him unto them, and expounded
unto him the way of God more perfectly.
▪ Ac 19:1-5 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos
was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the
upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain
disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the
Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto
him, We have not so much as heard whether there
be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto
what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto
John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily
baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying
unto the people, that they should believe on him
which should come after him, that is, on Christ
Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in
the name of the Lord Jesus.
III. The Baptism of Holy Spirit & Fire!▪ There is often much disagreement about this one as to if
this is addressing one or two baptisms!
▪ Holy Spirit baptism given to the Apostles on the day of
Pentecost and to the household of Cornelius (Act. 2:1-4;
10:44-48)
▸This was promised to the Apostles by Jesus and then
also given as a sign that the gentiles were accepted by
God! (Jn. 14:16,17,26; 15:26; 16:13; Act. 10)
▸The fire aspect is often say to be found in Acts 2 and
Heb. 12:29)
– Ac 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven
tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
– Heb 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.
Baptism of Fire▪ Fire baptism thought to be “hell fire” or the fire that will one
day destroy the world!
▸ Re 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of
fire. This is the second death.
▸ 2Th 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that
know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord
Jesus Christ:
▸ 2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in
the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a
great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat,
the earth also and the works that are therein shall be
burned up.
▸ 2Pe 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the
day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be
dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
IV. The Baptism of Suffering! This baptism is the one that give the (Eph. 4)
baptism its value▪ Lk. 12:50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with;
and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!
▪ Mt 20:22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know
not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I
shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that
I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
▪ Mt 20:23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink
indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism
that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand,
and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given
to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
Baptism of suffering!
▪ Ro 6:3 Know ye not, that so many
of us as were baptized into Jesus
Christ were baptized into his death?
▪ Ro 6:4 Therefore we are buried with
him by baptism into death: that like as
Christ was raised up from the dead by
the glory of the Father, even so we
also should walk in newness of life.
▪1Co 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare
unto you the gospel which I preached unto
you, which also ye have received, and
wherein ye stand; By which also ye are
saved, if ye keep in memory what I
preached unto you, unless ye have
believed in vain. For I delivered unto you
first of all that which I also received, how
that Christ died for our sins according to the
scriptures; And that he was buried, and that
he rose again the third day according to the
scriptures:
Christ was put to death so that we could live!
▪ It is by the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus that we
have hope for eternal life!
▪ Without this baptism of suffering, no one could go to heaven!
▸ Heb 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and
of goats should take away sins.
▸ Heb 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he
saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body
hast thou prepared me:
▸ Heb 10:6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast
had no pleasure.
▪ Christ came to take our place!
▸ 2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who
knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of
God in him.
V. The Baptism of the Great
Commission!▪ This is the “one” found in (Eph. 4:5 around 62 AD) the
one that is to last “unto the end of the world!
▸Mt 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them,
saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in
earth.
▸Mt 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Ghost:
▸Mt 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things
whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with
you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
▪ This is the one that came “after” the baptism of suffering
that had to come first!
This is the baptism preached by
Peter in Acts 2 and following!
▪ For the remission of sins in the name of Jesus!
▸ Ac 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent,
and be baptized every one of you in the name
of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
▪ This is the baptism that “now” saves us!
▸Mk 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized
shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall
be damned.
▪ 1Pe 3:20 Which sometime were
disobedient, when once the longsuffering
of God waited in the days of Noah, while
the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that
is, eight souls were saved by water.
▪ 1Pe 3:21 The like figure whereunto
even baptism doth also now save us (not
the putting away of the filth of the flesh,
but the answer of a good conscience
toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus
Christ:
The baptism that puts one into Christ
▪ Gal 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into
Christ have put on Christ.
▪ Ro 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were
baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
▸ It is only in Christ that Salvation is found!
– 2Ti 2:10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect's
sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is
in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
▸ It is only in Christ that all spiritual blessing are given!
– Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual
blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
Conclusion:▪ Even though we find more than one baptism in the Bible,
we can be sure that there is only “one” baptism for us today!
(Eph. 4:5)
▸ This is the baptism of the Great Comission, which was
done in water, for the forgiveness of sin in the name of
Jesus!
▪ Have you been baptized into Christ? Have you had your
sins forgiven?
▪ One must “hear” (Rom. 10:17) “believe” (Jn. 8:24)
“repent” (Lk. 13:3) “confess” (Rom. 10:10 and “be baptized”
(Mk. 16:16) and them live with Jesus (Rev. 2:10)
▪ If you are a Christian, then we hope that this lesson has
helped inform you about the different baptisms found in the
Bible and which one is needed today!
Ro 6:3 Know ye not, that so many
of us as were baptized into Jesus
Christ were baptized into his
death?
Ro 6:4 Therefore we are buried
with him by baptism into death:
that like as Christ was raised up
from the dead by the glory of the
Father, even so we also should
walk in newness of life.
