Patent sharing has a longhistory

1911 legal case opened up patent sharing. By WWII, hundreds of patents were being shared amongst the major auto makers..

The “compilers” of the first UNIVAC systems were distributed freely. Including the A-0 system created by Grace Hopper in 1951.
