QUESTION 2How did you attract and address

your audience?

Page 2: Question 2

Step 1

To start off with I had to research existing music magazines to be able to fully understand each individual aspect of a successful music magazine in order to be able to create my own.

I read Mojo magazine to just understand typical conventions of music magazines and then to move forward with my knowledge I looked at magazines Q and NME as I felt these were the closest representations of what I was trying to achieve with my magazine.

Step 2

Next, I had to do some research to gain an understanding of what was needed and wanted within a music magazine. Firstly, I constructed a questionnaire using survey monkey in which I asked a series of questions which would help me to gain information about what genre I should base my music magazine on and what age group would be most interested in it and things such as that.

The questionnaire helped me to gain an insight into what people wanted to see inside my magazine, what kind of people would be most interested in my magazine, how often my magazine would be read and at what amount to price it at and more. All of the decisions were critical in allowing me to move forward with the creation of my magazine so the questionnaire was a vital piece of research which I carried out.

Step 3

From my research I then had to make some final decisions about my music magazine such as what I wanted it to be called, the genre and what I would incorporate within it etc.

I found that the most popular genre was rock and that people wanted a monthly magazine and the front cover of the magazine had to be striking for them to be willing to buy it.

Step 4

As my audience was quite a wide range of people, I needed to incorporate something that would make both ends of the age scale want to read my magazine. To do this I incorporated a ‘new artist’ in my magazine to make the audience feel like they were ahead of the game and setting trends for others, so by reading my magazine they would be in the know of the music industry making them want to read the magazine. I also incorporated a special 10 limited edition covers on my magazine to make the magazine feel more exclusive to the reader.

Step 5

With all of the information that I had acquired through my research I attracted my audience with this knowledge and through using typical conventions in my magazine to make them want to read it.

Step 6

I made sure that I had a consistent house style throughout my magazine by using the same fonts and colour scheme throughout my whole magazine. By using the same colours this made my magazine consistent and easier to read. I used non bias colours to make sure I didn’t restrict my target audience to one gender and I also used colours which would compliment my images and make them look attractive and eye catching, again, making the reader want to read the magazine.

Step 7 I used pull quotes in my magazine article and on

the front cover. This meant that there is more chance of people wanting to buy the magazine even if they only see it on a shelf. As they pull quotes should make them want to read the full articles within the magazine and as my target audience includes teenagers, who have a natural curiosity for things, it means that it would be a successful technique in attracting young people to read my magazine. I purposely used very strong quotes to use so that it would automatically make readers want to pick the magazine up straight away. “ I want to be

that breath of fresh air”

Step 8

I had to ensure that I incorporated strong images throughout my magazine to make the magazine look attractive and interesting.

The front cover image had to be very strong and attract readers in as it is the initial image that they will see on the magazine. I chose to use a closer up picture of the model I used so that you could see all of her features in the image and her face came across very strongly. I decided to make the model look directly into the camera so that it looked as though she was looking straight out at the reader. This is useful as it meant that the reader was drawn into her face so therefore drawn into the magazine.

The images in my magazine are mostly females but I have incorporated a male into my magazine, again, so not too restrict my target audience and to ensure that most people would be interested in my magazine.

Step 9

As my target audience is 17-30 year olds, I had to ensure that the language used would appeal to both ages. I decided to use language that was sophisticated but still informal in the appropriate places to ensure that their was a friendly feel within the magazine however the language wasn’t too informal that those of an older age wouldn’t find the magazine insulting or below their level of reading.
