Metal roofing is a superior roofing system that can last for 30 to 50 years.

Some manufacturers even offer a lifetime warranty. People in the past used

metal roofs for protection, and it’s still being used in modern times.

The Historical Versions of Metal Roofing

The first use of metal for roofing dates back to 970 BC in Jerusalem.

Historians discovered the earliest metal roofing on a temple. Years later, in

the Virgin Islands, metal roofing was able to resist tough winds from tropical

hurricanes. They learned that the material can also resist fire and is resilient

during earthquakes.

In America, metal roofing made its debut in the 19th century. The U.S. Mint

in New Orleans is one of the first few buildings that used metal roofs in the

South. It was fireproof and had a corrugated metal roof.

The Gateway to Accessible Metal Roofing

Robert L. Merwin opened his company in St. Croix in 1892 and created

corrugated metal roofing panels. The company created panels that are

efficient and cost-effective, which led to the material being the most popular

option for roofing.

The 20th century and its technological innovations in automation and

manufacturing greatly increased metal roofing sales. By this time,

agricultural and commercial structures began using metal roofing. The 21st

century brought modern metal roofing methods that paved the way for

improved manufacturing, economical practicality, and coating systems.

The Modern Metal Roofing Designs

Modern roofing methods introduced an array of metal roofing styles. Metal

shingle roofing is the most popular choice among residents as it gives a

traditional look to the roof. Granule coated metal shingles are made of

acrylic granule chips fixed on a 26-gauge steel. Metal slate roofing has the

physical properties of its traditional equivalent. Other designs include shake

style metal shingles, standing seam metal roofing, tile metal panels, and

exposed fastened metal roofing panels.

Metal roofing is a durable roofing material. Its unique properties ensure that

it will be used by commercial and residential industries for years to come.
