Introduction to Technical Processing Section• All the activities and processes concerned with acquiring,

organizing, preparing, and maintaining library collections, generally we can say Classification, Cataloging & preparing of MARC record.

• The TPS of MUET Library & Online Information Center plays a key role to function the library. It makes a bridge between the acquisition of documents to the Circulation.

• It also plays a vital role to run the functioning of this library services smoothly.

What is a MARC record?A MARC record is a MA chine-Readable Cataloging record.

MARC Definition:International Standard Format allows for the uniform representation and communication of bibliographic data b/w systems using MARC Records

MARC 21: The original LC MARC format change into MARC 21 and has become the standard used by most library computer programs. The MARC 21 bibliographic format, as well as all official MARC 21 documentation, is maintained by the Library of Congress.

The MARC 21 format uses "260" "$a" "$b" and "$c" to mark the field that holds imprint data instead of storing the words "publication area," "place of publication," "name of publisher," and "date of publication" in each record.

Transferring Documents MARC Record for OPAC DataBase

• By e-mail sending .mrc file to database administrator for uploading marc records.

Preparing Transfer list & transferring Documents to Concern Sec/Dept.

• Using Excel software

• Physically Sorting dept/section wise documents.

• Preparing transfer list.

• Acquired approval from dept. after sending to them.

Generating Documents Barcode Labels

• 1stly acquired data from MRK file.

• 2nd needed data entered in Excel sheet with extension DBF

• Using WINlabel Software.

• Collecting data from DBF

• Generating Spine Barcode label of Documents.

Final Checking Documents MARC Record

• Prof reading of MARC Records

• Remove minor mistakes

• Finally converting MRK file into MRC format

• Using MARC Edit software (4.5 ver or latest)

• Converting MRC file into MRK format.

• Remove Unnecessary MARC Tags.

• Insert necessary MARC Tags. (852,910,938)

Harvesting Documents MARC Record

• Using Bookwhere software (Multi-Server supported)

• Searching particular document by ISBN, Author, title…..etc

• If particular found then export/harvest it.

• Save file with any name with extension .mrc

• Further harvesting of MARC record as per same method.
