Why use a pool cover?

©Plastipack 2014

Evaporation resource and heat loss

By preventing evaporation 70% of the potential heat loss can be prevented.

Why?

To heat 1 gram of water = 1 calorie of energy To evaporate 1 gram of water = 540 calories of energy.

1 calorie = 4.186 joules the specific heat of water. This is how a solar blanket is able to heat the pool so effectively. Compared to an uncovered pool, gram for gram, the energy savings are vast.

All Plastipack materials reduce evaporation by over 98%.

Insulation

The air trapped inside and between the bubbles work as insulation.

400 micron Light Blue material.Thermal information in different formats, R, U and K valuesThe R value for Plastipack’s 400 Grade products is 0.06 m²K/W.The overall thermal conductance or U value is , which is 16.67 W/(m2K) for Plastipack’s 400 grade material. From this a k value (Thermal conductivity) can also be worked out, when R value is known.

So k value is 0.00606 (W/K-m) for Plastipack’s 400 grade material.

Keep debris out of the pool

Keeping the cover on the pool not only keeps the heat in the pool but also prevents foreign matter from entering the pool.

Only 10% of the chlorine in a pool is used as the active sanitizer to keep the water safe. The other 90% is used as an oxidiser to break down foreign matter in the water caused by debris blowing in and bathing loads.

It is of utmost importance that the material is maintained according to industry standards, and should always be removed from the pool when shock dosing.

“I replaced my standard cover recently with a Sol+Guard™ pool cover with GeoBubble™ Technology bubble design; the new cover is really effective! I am very happy with the cover’s performance and have already seen the temperature in my pool increase by 3 to 4°C since replacing my old cover with the Sol+Guard™ material.

The GeoBubble™ design seems much more durable and thicker than my old cover and I have high hopes for it lasting longer than my traditional cover on my salt chlorinated pool. The Sol+Guard™ soft blue tint looks elegant on the water and makes it hard to spot any residue from the water or dirt that may rest on the top of the cover.”

Sol+Guard was designed and tested to allow the maximum solar energy to pass through the material heating the water. Sol+Guard transmits nearly 80% of the sun’s energy into the pool, heating the water and basin of the pool to provide an even temperature throughout the water.

The tests in the UK showed that a covered pool without any heating system can keep the water at a comfortable temperature, keeping the need for additional heating at a minimum.

"As someone who has been in the pool industry for many years I am always seeing new products making great claims as to how good they are so it was with some doubt in my mind that I tried the black EnergyGuard™ GeoBubble™ pool cover on my own pool.I put it on in September and did not put any winterising chemicals at all in the pool. When I drew the cover back in May I was delighted and, I have to admit, quite surprised to see that the pool water was absolutely crystal clear. Just as I had left it 7 months ago. All the pool needed was one visit from my pool cleaner and it was ready to swim in. I am highly delighted with the algae-restricting performance of the EnergyGuard™ cover. Not only did it give me a crystal clear pool, it also saved money on winterising chemicals. For the first time in 20 years I did not have to do any Spring clean up in my pool."Peter Joyce. How the material heats the water

Not all the potential energy available in the sun’s atmospheric window is absorbed by the water before being reflected out of the pool. By using the EnergyGuard™ material, almost all the light potential energy is captured and radiated into the surface of the pool. By running the filtration or simply swimming in the pool, the free heat provided by the EnergyGuard™ material is quickly spread throughout the pool, raising the temperature by up to 4˚C.

©Plastipack 2014

How the cover saves chemicals

Photosynthesis uses the visible spectrum. By being opaque, the cover inhibits photosynthesis, preventing outbreaks of algae in the pool. This in turn minimises the amount of chemicals required as well as the pool's filtration requirements. Active chlorine is deactivated by UV light. By absorbing this energy, the EnergyGuard™ material prevents the deactivation of the active sanitizer, reducing the need for chemicals in the pool. EnergyGuard™ reduces chemical demand by up to 70% and allows for a chemical-free shut down or hibernation of the pool.

CoolGuard™ is an opaque material with a high reflective index in the visible and infra red spectrum, keeping the sun's energy away from the pool and in turn reducing the temperature by up to 15%.

Though the cover will insulate a pool if heating is used, the CoolGuard™ is ideal for hot climates where a refreshing swimming environment is preferred.

By absorbing this energy, CoolGuard™ prevents the deactivation of the active sanitizer, reducing the amount of chemicals required in the pool. CoolGuard™ reduces the chemical demand by up to 70% and allows for a chemical-free shut down or hibernation of the pool.

©Plastipack 2014

Storing the cover on a reel in direct sunlight can cause the material to deform and take the shape of the reel, where after the cover will lose its ability to lay flat on the water.

The material deforms as the insulating properties of the cover causes heat to build between the layers which can reach a harmful level.

To prevent this, Plastipack developed the reflective cover to allow ease of storage when not in use.

Using the reflective cover as protection, the internal temperature of the material can be reduced by up to 30°C.

The new design removes residual stresses from the material, creating a more durable, longer lasting bubble. Unlike most standard 12mm bubble designs, GeoBubble™ technology has

been engineered specifically to survive the swimming pool environment.
