It is very interesting to analyze how necessity is the mother of all inventions. Image masking is of many kinds - there is the simple image masking which dulls and merges the sharp edges of a clipped image, so that it can gel well with the new background.

In the case of a complex to clip image, it can be the image of a woman/man with flowing hair or that of a landscape with the foliage in the background or that of an intricate object like that of a lace which has a complicated design or that of a simple stole which is semi-transparent, the clipped image is far from usable. They have to go through image masking to make sure that the background from the original is completely removed from the clipped image even in the case of complex clipping paths.

Another common masking technique is when there are layers involved. This is achieved when a masked layer is added to an image and the masking is used to hide sections of the images so that there is not one unwanted pixel on the image. This technique is also used when you want to add multiple images to come up with a unified image - this is largely used to get a complete view of the product or that of a property/house in the case of real estate.
