How to deal with Kerbside DumpingAn idea to mitigate kerbside dumping

How often have you seen such a scene in your

neighborhood. Unregulated dumping of waste which

ends up piling for days together till the truck comes

along. We’ve to sift through all this junk to get our

food and end up eating a lot of plastic which is killing

at least 300 of us in Bangalore alone. CAN YOU

PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!

Cause, Solution and Benefits

The Cause

- BBMP/Contractor Pourakarmikas typically collect Rs.20-50 per month from individual homes

- Small homes do not pay this amount, hence no collection

- They prefer to dump the waste in the nearest “collection point”

- PKs too dump their collection at “collection point” for the trucks to pick-up- Others who can otherwise afford to pay too add their contributions on the way to the office

The Proposed Solution

- Educate and establish segregation around the “collection point”

- Recruit a Community Champion living near the point- Set-up proposed structure at kerbside

- Educate community jointly on use of the facility

- Monitor>>Adjust>>Improvise>>Improve

Benefits to the Community-Better health with controlled dumping and regular clearance

- Cows get to eat fresh waste totally free of plastics and other mixed stuff

- Community participation and involvement

- Smoother traffic flow and free footpaths

Solution Detailed

Separate Plastic or

Metal drums for Dry

Waste and Debris

waste. Bins chained to

hooks on ground to

prevent vandalism/theft

Cement trough for Wet Waste.

Dry Waste picked up

every 2 days for

recycling. Manual

Compacting arrangement

can be employed to

compact dry waste

Debris waste

cleared daily

Cattle can stand around this

shallow trough and feed on the

segregated Wet Waste

Cows still can have their fill without getting to eat plastic or obstructing

traffic as they munch while recycling happens alongside.

Trough is cleaned daily by a

community representative.

Outlet to nearest sewage pit.
