CFPAR’S ACTIVITIES IN VIETNAM

A- Key learning from CFPAR sessions from various experiments

1. Select the appropriate place and farmers: Place: Satisfy with the requested of project (rainfed area), not too far, easy

for transportation, local government support for project, have meeting room and fields according to the experiments

Participants: Are smart farmers, interesting with studies, not too old and not too busy with other jobs.

2. Select the appropriate experiments to solve the problems at the location. Fields experiments should be large enough (at least 500 m2) to arrange the different treatments

3. Execute the principles of study: Time, dose, methods to arrange and follow-up field study, fields survey, take note and calculate data, make the reports...

4. Facilitators should be know the contents of experiments and answer any questions of participants

B- Areas where input cost could be reduced

1. Seed: Transplanted with thin density and reduced seed on broadcast rice saved to 60% of seed. (BG 10-15 kg/ha; HT 40 kg/ha compared with 30-40 kg/ha (BG) and 80-100 kg/ha (HT)on framers practice fields).

2. Fertilizer (nitrogen): Application nitrogen appropriate, in time saved 40% (from 140 kg/ha (SRI) compared with 220 kg/ha (FP)

3. Chemical pesticides: In the fields study, not use pesticide and herbicide, but in FP spray 1 time for herbicide and 1 time for pesticide (in HT)

4. Water: In FP fields, they keep water almost of season, but in study fields only get water when necessary

D- What areas coming FPAR would focus(The experiments on FPAR will be do in next season)

1. Transplanting density (number of hills/m2, number of tillers/hill)

2. Number of seed on broadcast rice (kg/ha)3. Dose of Nitrogenous (kg/ha) and application time4. Weed management (by herbicide and by hand)5. Water management (Drainage and not drainage)

SWOT Analysis

Strengths

• IPM and SRI programme have been setup and develop longtime in Vietnam and get the successful results

• Have good trainers with the many experiences, enthusiasm to train for farmers in the fields

• Participants self aware, would like to study, execute the regulation of CFPAR• Get the supported from local leaders from provincial to commune levels for all

CFPAR's activities• The fields study selected near the meeting room, easy for transportation and

survey• Trainers and participants involved direct to the field experiments and work as

farmers in the fields• From experiments, get the higher benefit if compared with FP fields. It is make

the participants believed on the study

Weaknesses

Farmers were first time involved to the field experiments, so still to be like a fish out of water.

The CFPAR's activities only on 6 sessions (23 days) on the long season of rice stages, other time should hire the people to take care the fields rice. Participants not able to survey and take care the fields during all rice development stages

This year is heavy drought, event we often pump water many time. It is effected to the rice’s growth and development and effected to the results of experiments

Farmers come from 3 districts, some people live far from CFPAR’s site about 40 km, difficult to travel every day.

Budget still limited and come late (Now still not have budget to sign LOA with province for FPAR in Summer season 2015)

Page 22: Key learnings including SWOT analysis and draft plans for the next action research cycle (Vietnam) - Mr. Tran Van Hieu

Opportunities

This is new project to implement in the rainfed area, exited farmers involved to the field experiments

SRI was developed in Vietnam from longtime and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) recognized SRI as an “Agricultural technical advancement” and instructing to other places to apply

The participants from CFPAR will become trainers to train for farmers at their location to make the field experiments on FPARs in next seasons, they knew what are the problems and how to solve them

From field experiments, persuasive farmers follow to apply in the next seasons

Page 23: Key learnings including SWOT analysis and draft plans for the next action research cycle (Vietnam) - Mr. Tran Van Hieu

Threats

Low price of rice production on some recent years, it is make the farmers not pleasure with the field works

By the tradition practice of farmers (high density & many tillers for transplanting with old seeding, application herbicide...). It not easy to change

Climate changed effected to the crops (increase pest and disease, drought, decrease yield and productivity)

Rat is big problem at the rainfed area.
