Embryonic Cartilage Slide label: Mammal cartilage
bone developing
Sarah Aurora W. Tabada
Cartilage• connective tissue consisting of a dense matrix
of collagen fibres and elastic fibres embedded in a rubbery ground substance.
• Chondroblasts o synthesizes the matrix, eventually embedded in the matrix
as chondrocytes.
• Chondrocytes o mature cartilage cells occurring, either singly or in groups, within
spaces (lacunae) in the matrix
• Perichondrium o membrane of dense irregular connective tissue surrounding surface of
cartilageo Only site in the cartilage with blood vessels and nerves
Hyaline Cartilage• Most abundant• Structure:
- Consist of bluish-white, shiny ground elastic material with a matrix of chondroitin sulphate into which many fine collagen fibrils are embedded
- It contains numerous chondrocytes.
- Functions:- Provide smooth surfaces for easy movement and sliding of tissue over
each other. - Support movable joints between bones (reduce friction)- Provide flexibility and support- Support physical structure of embryo before bones form
Hyaline Cartilage• Location:
o Bronchio Bronchial Tubeso Costal Cartilageso Larynx (voice-box)o Noseo Tracheao Surface of bones at joints susceptible to wear
• Ends of the long bones and anterior ends of the ribs o Embryonic skeleton (i.e. in fetus)
