WHAT ISMEDIA SALES?

WHO CAN DO IT?You will be selling advertising space to companies who want to promote their products or services. Depending on the company, you could be selling advertisements in magazines, newspapersor on poster sites; airtime on TV, radio or cinema or digital opportunities on leading websites. With business media companiesyou could also be selling delegate spacesat International business conferences orselling high level subscriptions to businessinformation, intelligence and research.

We represent clients across all sectorsof the media industry. All are looking forbright, articulate, numerate and enthusiastic graduates with excellent communication skills andare hungry for a career in mediasales.

You will typically start your career aspart of a telesales team which is fast, frenetic and fun. You and your team willbe constantly meeting deadlines andhitting targets, which can at times bedemanding. You will need to be resilient and able to take rejection and work under pressure. If you excel, you will be rewarded via the company’s commission structure and fast promotion. Being a good team player is another key skill that will help you progress up the media sales ladder.

You do not need sales experience to join at graduate entry level. All of our clientsoffer sales training throughout yourcareer with them. This is often a combination of on the job training withyour manager and attending training courses run by your company. You willbe taught a variety of skills, enablingyou to excel in your role.

Do I like working to targets, goals and deadlines?Could I cope with the constant pressure to perform?Am I naturally competitive?Am I self motivated?Am I driven by financial reward?Do I want to make this my career over the next 5-10years?Do I have good communication skills?Am I naturally persuasive with my friends and family?

Here is an example of a typicalsales career path within the mediaindustry and what each role involves:

Classified Sales Executive- Up to 12 monthsThis is where you start off. You willbe selling over the phone, normallyworking as part of a team. Your client base will tend to be a mixture of clients who already advertise with your company, advertisers in competitior titles or companies whohaven’t heard of your title but wouldbenefit from advertising (this is the cold calling part of your role).

It is your job to convince your clientbase that advertising with yourmagazine will help them achievetheir business objectives. To achieve this successfully you must find out what your clients requirements are and match the benefits of advertising with your magazine to these needs.You will work towards a team targetand/or individual targets, which willbe set by your manager.

Sales/Senior Sales Executive- 12-24 months.

In addition to selling over the phone,you will also sell face to face tolarger clients, going out to meet them and demostrating how your magazine can help meet yourclient’s objectives.

These clients are likely to spendmore and want more sophisticated ways of reaching their target

audience/achieving their objectives.You will also sell to media agencieswho buy advertising space on behalfof their clients. This role may be onthe same magazine, or on anothermagazine/product within the company.

Assistant Advertising Manager- 24 months +In addition to managing and sellingto key accounts, you will start todevelop sales and man managementskills. You responsibilities are likelyto include; managing the advertisingrevenue, setting team commissiontargets, assisting the ad managerin training junior staff.

Advertising Manager- 4 years +Reporting to the Advertising Director,you are now responsible for thesales team and ensuring that youand your team achieve the advertising revenue target for your magazine for that year. Your other responsibilities will include; developing sales plans, budgetingand forecasting, recruiting, training and managing your sales team

Advertising Director/PublisherYou can continue to work your wayup to Advertising DIrector, where you will be responsible for the salesteams and advertising revenue forseveral publications and/or websites.

Alternatively, you could work your way up to be a Publisher, where you will be responsible for all aspectsof a magazine; sales, editorial,circulation and promotion.

Having developed your telesales skills successfully there are many opportunities to progress in your media sales career. Media companies are constantly launching new titles, websites and expanding advertising opportunities available, so sales people rarely work long term on the same product. As a result, you will gain valuable sales experience and media knowledge by working in different environments and with different people.

HOW MUCH WILL I EARN?

The lifestyle andearning power setsthe media salesindustry apart from most others.

A career in media sales can be highly rewardingand highly paid!

Starting salaries for graduatesvary but typically you can expect to earn between£18,000 - £20,000 in yourfirst year. Many companiesoffer several performance related pay reviews in thefirst two years with the company,so your salary can increase quickly, with on target earnings (OTE) of up to £40,000 p.a.

Commission is normally paid onachievement of monthly andquarterly targets, and tends tobe based on a mixture of teamand individual targets. You canexpect to earn your commissionif you work to your potential.

As a senior sales executive,you can earn up to £30,000basic per year (OTE £40,000 -£55,000 per year). Advertisingmanagers can expect to earnup to £45,000 basic per year,plus commission. There is ofcourse the potential to earnmuch more at senior levels
