Jürgen Habermas, The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere
“Only in the light of the public sphere did that which existed become revealed, did everything become visible to all. In the discussion among citizens issues were made topical and took on shape.”
Electronic media have always held the promise for more deliberative democracies, more communitarian forms of civic engagement.
Mediated Communities is an effort to reimagine the strategies available to communities seeking to strengthen democracy in the digital age, and the potential for social change in the face of institutional, political and economic barriers.

strategies for resistance through media literacy
• choose an issue which at its core is about social justice
• provide context through critical scholarship (*critical perspective)
• engage in media production and dissemination that builds on these first two elements
- what are the issues of social justice in your
community?
- where are they happening?
- what do you know about the problem?
- how much does the place where that problem is
occurring have to do with why that problem is
occurring?
- more importantly, what do you not know?
- how can you find out?
- once you've done that, how can you share what
you know?
- what do we do after the things we do?
- how do we avoid “parachute engagement”?
- what is the benefit to these communities from
our work?
- how can the work be mutually engaging and
empowering?
