WHISTLEBLOWER URGES HONESTY IN CHURCH
UCA news
Audit commissioner encourages financial administrators to report irregularities.
A whistleblower who earned the nation’s respect for exposing alleged corruption in the military has urged financial administrators to do the same in the Church.
Heidi Mendoza says everyone should maintain honesty in government, business and even in the Church, if society wishes to do away with scandals.
“We cannot dream of an honest government without doing anything. We need to do something,” Mendoza said in a speech.
Mendoza, who was appointed a commissioner at the Commission on Audit (COA) in April, testified earlier this year before Congress on alleged graft in the military.
She had worked for the COA for over 20 years and had been part of the fraud investigation unit probing government transactions.
She resigned from the COA in 2005 and was working with the Asian Development Bank before appearing in the congressional probes.
“The key is being true to God. If you have faith you don’t have to worry about many things that might come your way,” she said.
“I’m not holy or religious but I’m always thinking about God’s will. Another way to [maintain honesty] is constant prayer,” she said.
“I’m always proud that I am a Catholic. I’m always proud that I’m a Filipino. I’m always proud that I’m a public servant,” she added.
It is difficult to hold money “especially if it is not yours” but “it’s not true that it’s hard to be honest even in times of need,” Mendoza stressed.
