My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Lord’s Res-urrection…Easter Sunday. The movie “Love Story” long ago declared that love means never having to say I’m sorry. The whole history of salvation that we cel-ebrate especially during these three days of the Easter Triduum says exactly the opposite: love not only nudges us, but demands that we say “I’m sorry.” It is the only way we can be faithful to the gift of life and love that God gives and that we celebrate during these holy days. The mystery that we celebrate dur-ing these days is a witness to God’s great desire to bring us to reconciliation. These days are a singular opportunity to be reconciled with God and each other and no other action so completely captures the mean-ing of what we are celebrating. Sinfulness, divisions, disharmony for which we need to seek reconciliation is not something new on the horizon. Already in the early Church we find examples that all was not per-fect in the Christian communities and Scripture al-ready attests to how the Church dealt with it. We are admonished, for example, to gentleness when dealing with each other’s faults (see Gal 6:1), but we are also admonished to be honest with each other. As diffi-cult as this may be, this is the dying to self that living the paschal mystery entails and the only way to new, resurrected life.

The Church also has always ritualized reconciliation. Since reconciliation has to do with our identity as body of Christ and the common life of God we share, baptism first reconciles us to God by making us God’s daughter or son and puts us in relationship with each other as members of the body of Christ. Eucharist completes our Christian initiation and is the sacrament of reconciliation par excellence be-cause it is the sacrament where the body of Christ is nourished and its unity strengthened. For small of-fenses that harm the body of Christ that is the Church, celebrating Eucharist reconciles us to one another as we share together at God’s table. Coming together to that very table is a sign that we wish unity and peace with one another; indeed, this is one of the symbolic meanings of the Communion procession itself. It didn’t take long in our Church’s history to recognize that the ideal of peace and unity at the very heart of the Church’s life would be disrupted by scan-dalous, sinful acts of members of the community. It

was thought that some kind of public penance would be necessary to witness to the individual’s sincerity of repentance and desire for reconciliation with God and the community. Out of this, the Sacrament of Pen-ance developed and is another ritual means given us by the Church to redirect ourselves to God and heal the divisions among us; well celebrated, this sacra-ment can effect a profound change of the whole per-son. Whether reconciliation is brought about by the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, or Penance, at stake is always the unity of the Church. These visible signs remind us that we cannot take our harmful ac-tions for granted but must always admit when we weaken or break our relationship with God and others and strive to restore the unity that is at the very heart of who we are. Reconciliation is, therefore, the work of salvation because it is concerned with how we are one with God and each other. During these holy days we celebrate Jesus’ self-giving so that we might be reconciled, be one in Christ. In this we learn how we ought to live, being reconciled with one another, so that our unity is preserved and brings God glory and praise. During the Easter Season the church pro-claims: “O Death, where is your victory? O Death (Sheol) where is your sting?”

Congratulations to our new Catholic: Hannah Quin-cannon who was received into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist at the Easter Vigil Mass. Thanks to our community building core for the great pasta dinner and intergenerational cat-echesis…It was a sell out; Thanks to our Parish Youth and their advisors for a fitting and prayerful Living Stations of the Cross; Thanks goes out to all those who have prepared our facilities for the Rites of Holy Week and those who helped us clean the build-ings, furniture, vessels and vestments; To our parish-ioner, Mario Geneve, for his handiwork in painting; To those who taught palm weaving; To those who prepared the Annual Easter Egg Hunt. We are very blessed with a dedicated Parish Staff and scores and scores of loyal parishioners to provide the services which characterize our parish. THANKS TO ALL. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.

Happy Easter!

Father Jeff

The Octave of Easter, the first Eight days… The celebration of Our Lord’s Resurrection continues in the Church for eight days, called the Octave of Easter. Each day of the Octave is ranked as a Solem-nity in the Church’s liturgical calendar, the highest ranking of liturgical celebration. At Masses during the Octave of Easter, as on Sundays, the Gloria, is recited or sung. And at the end of each Mass of the Octave, the double Alleluia is sung at the dismissal.

The idea of an Octave of a great celebration has its roots in the Old Testament. There are many Jewish observances that lasted for eight days, for example, Passover and Tabernacles. In the Catholic Church, we celebrate eight days of Christmas as well as eight days of Easter.

Forty Days to the Lord’s Ascension, Fifty to Pentecost Sunday… St. Athanasius wrote: “The fifty days from the Sunday of the Resurrection to the Pentecost Sunday are cele-brated in joy and exultation as one feast day, indeed as one ‘great Sunday’. These are the days, above all, in which the Alleluia is sung.” During these first forty days, Jesus made many appearances to his disciples until His Ascension, which was witnessed by many, a reminder of His second coming. In the same way, we too prepare for Christ’s Resurrection. However, there is much more for ten days after His Resurrection; we prepare to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit on Pente-cost Sunday, fifty days after Easter, the birth of the Church! Christ’s work on earth is complete.

Saint Joseph the Worker, May 1… On May 1, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker and optional Memorial. Instituted by Pope Pius XII in 1955, we are reminded of the dignity of workers as well as the importance of Christian work in the world. His virtuous life as a laborer and provider then becomes the model not only for all fathers, but for all workers in general. It is on this day in many places throughout the world when Fathers are honored.
